Best EFA's for a vegan/raw foodist? Omega 3-6-9?
Posted by: axiom ()

I've read so much on this the last few days & now I am getting confused from info. overload. What do you guys recommend as a well rounded EFA/Omega supplement?

I assume this is correct - the ideal ratio for vegetarians of omega-6’s (LA) to omega-3’s (ALA) is between 2:1 and 4:1.

Thanks in advance!

No supplement. Avoid grains and eat predominantly raw fruits and veggies.

Really? Hmmm....I was on the forum several months ago & saw a thread on this, but I am unable to locate it now. At that time, there were supplement recommendations.

Plus, I like grains! winking smiley

Why does it have to be "best?" Why not just do various ones? I am more interested in Omega 3s, as we apparently get enough of 6s. So flax, hemp, chia, even olives.

Its better to decrease the overconsumption of omega-6s that it is to supplement with omega-3s. I dont recommend flax, though it is popular, because to me, it feels like a chemical in my body, that is, it makes my throat sore. But chia seeds feel good to me, and they are fun to use in raw puddings and chia fresca. My favorite seed is hemp seeds, which have a nice balance of omega-6/omega-3.

Leafy Greens are about 12% Fat, so if you eat ~2 Pounds of Greens a day, you won't need to supplement. As Prana said, Hemp Seeds have the perfect Essential Fatty Acid Profile, as well as a perfect Amino Acid Profile.

No way could I eat 2 lbs. of Greens a day. I could juice that amount, though. I suppose some of the efa's would be left behind in the pulp. I'll have to try out the hemp seeds.

Would hemp protein contain the same amount of efa's as the seeds, or is some of that lost in the processing?

I bet they take out the fat in the hemp protein. Its best to eat the whole seed, but here in the United States that means eating a hulled hemp seed, because the government doesn't want you growing any of that wacky tobacky.

If you're eating a balanced diet, you shouldn't have to supplement...that's part of the beauty of the raw diet, getting all of your nutrients in their naturally occurring form, raw food.

Agreed, Prana.

@ fresherthanlife - I agree with that too, but the whole thing about not being able to get adaquate nutrition from raw foods these days because of how they deplete the soil...I don't know...

I would dare say an apple of today probably does not contain the same level of nutrients of one from 70 yrs. ago.
