Increase EPA & DHA assimilation up from 8%

I would like to know how to Increase EPA & DHA assimilation more than 8% from ALA of Flax , Chia, Hemp, etc., what food combination would help other than adding Vitamin C and Vitamin E intake (by crackers ingredients such as sun flower seeds and spices or mix the sprouts of Flax and Chia with fruits) would that help body to efficiently convert ALA up all the way to EPA & DHA (say up to e 1000 mg)?. Please post your comments and experiments.

According to Dr. Gabriel Cousens use coconut oil for flax at least - 10%.

Hello again,

the study in AJCN does highly recommend to get good levels of amino acids, pyridoxine (vitamin b6), biotin (vitamin b7), calcium, copper, magnesium, and zinc to allow various enzymes to do their work effectively in converting fatty acids to EPA and DHA. Here is what we can do.

Zinc has a very poor absorption rate from plants and can be low in vegan diets, so we need to increase bioavailability of this mineral be removing anti nutrients via enzyme and probiotic supplements, this will also improve chelation of the zinc and other minerals. We also need to watch the vegan diet isn't too high in copper because this limits absorption of zinc. It is also recommended we sprout our high zinc content seeds to increase B vitamin levels and partially break down anti nutrients and to increase fatty acid levels and increase limiting amino acids, and use things like semi-regular sprouted poppy/sesame because the high calcium levels also control the excess copper in the vegan diet (contrary to a recent animal study posted here recently) and contribute to more efficient EPA/DHA production. We also use vitamin C in fresh foods to increase iron levels so this also keeps copper more in check. We can also use chlorella to improve zinc levels and to re-adjust the zinc/coopper ratio. We also provide a ratio of 2 parts omega 6 to 1 part omega 3's or even 1:1...this provides the highest chance of an efficient conversion to EPA/DHA. 4:1 is o.k, but now the peer reviewed science is recommending 2:1 or 1:1.

Also, best not to add omega 6 oils to the diet.

Check out this study to get a basic rundown on omega 3's and nutrients which help with the conversion.

I know you don't want to sprout or use probiotics, but sprouting the sesame/poppy and chia can greatly help.

Oops, made a mistake in the above post. Calcium increases copper absorption, not helps limit availability like was said above. Still, don't be scared of the calcium because vegan diets are often inbalanced in the copper - phosphorous ratio, and we need calcium for efficient conversion to EPA/DHA.

Lots of regular sprouted chia is good. Some sprouted flax can also be good.

Coconut oil may help (not sure), but the solution for increasing EPA/DHA depends on many factors. Good nutrient levels and synergy is important.

If coconut oil is used l would use it sparingly for various reasons l won't go into right now.

Thanks The Sproutarian Man (), I will definitely add sprouted poppy/sesame/flax seeds to my diet and need to work on finding out chlorella source in our country. Great explanation.

You don't have to but it's convenient. I grind 1/4 cup flax seed and put a spoonful of coconut oil in with it in the bowl. Then I add 3/4 cup hot water to that and mash then stir well. I use black salt to season it.

Omega 6 = 2.7 grams
Omega 3 = 9.4 grams
Omega 6:3 ratio = 0.285:1

This recipe allows for adding Omega 6's for the remainder of the day without having to worry about your Omegas getting out of balance.

This is what I do with organic only oranges. First I use the zest in a quart of water soaked overnight for an essential oil tonic which I add a bit of apricot flavored stevia to. (Orange zest contains 60 flavonoids and 170 phytonutrients I've read.)

Then I separate off the pith, where almost half of the vitamin c is in oranges, and add it to a raw soup I prepare that day.

Then I give the flesh to the parrot. Nothing goes to waste and we are both happy with our share of the fruit.

You're welcome, Ramanan.

The essential oil in citrus fruits is in the zest so I soak zests in a quart jar of water overnight in the fridge. In the morning I strain out the zest for the convenience of drinking the tonic with a straw. Sometimes I get fancy and use the tonic in other dishes or in a mix with other cold brewed teas but most of the time I don't because I like it straight with a bit of stevia.

At first I used a zester but it took too long for the amount of tonics I drink so I invested in a Zip Zester, which I love and use all the time. I think a Zip Zester would make a great addition to your workplace, btw.

Here's a nice video I found for you...

I forgot to say that the Zip Zester does not come with the finest zest blade, which is the one I use for zests I use in foods, but I got it on Amazon for $15 bucks.

Here is the company's video which shows a close up of the zests their machine delivers...
