Vitamin B12 synthesis by human small intestinal bacteria [www.nature.com] also some interesting info in the wiki folate masks b12 defic, plus other good stuff in the wiki The total amount of vitamin B12 stored in body is about 2–5 mg in adults. Around 50% of this is stored in the liver.[18] Approximately 0.1% of this is lost per day by secretions into the gut, as not all these secretions are reabsorbed. Bile is the main form of B12 excretion; however, most of the B12 secreted in the bile is recycled via enterohepatic circulation. Excess B12 beyond the blood's binding capacity is typically excreted in urine.[18] Owing to the extremely efficient enterohepatic circulation of B12, the liver can store several years’ worth of vitamin B12; therefore, nutritional deficiency of this vitamin is rare. How fast B12 levels change depends on the balance between how much B12 is obtained from the diet, how much is secreted and how much is absorbed. B12 deficiency may arise in a year if initial stores are low and genetic factors unfavourable, or may not appear for decades. In infants, B12 deficiency can appear much more quickly.[64] Re: b12 stuff

Date: March 30, 2014 06:18PM The liver is able to store enough vitamin B-12 to supply the human body for an extended period of time. Most healthy adults store between 2,000 and 3,000 micrograms of vitamin B-12 in the body and only lose 3 micrograms each day. Although the body loses some of its vitamin B-12 via the formation and secretion of bile, some of the vitamin B-12 is reabsorbed, helping to limit total loss of vitamin B-12 each day.
that's 3 years without any exogenous b12 Re: b12 stuff

If this process has been damaged, raw foods alone may not be enough to jumpstart the process again. Re: b12 stuff

Currently i am taking b12 forte but I wish I could make b12 culture at home myself. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/30/2014 06:28PM by CommonSenseRaw. Re: b12 stuff

Date: March 30, 2014 06:49PM It is possible that some vegans can ward of overt vitamin B12 deficiency, and even mild B12 deficiency, through B12 production by bacteria in the small intestine.
