It is possible to grow bitter gourd vines even in zone 5 if you start them early indoors. I've done it. They are a beautiful plant and the leaves are edible, too.

These days I buy them in the local Mexican store. They are very easy to dehydrate and powder for adding to smoothies, juices, and soups.
