does anyone know what this fruit that i bought at a farmers market is?

it looks just like a cherimoya but it's dark brown/black and it is hard at this time. i can't find any pics online that match it - they called it a red cherimoya but i don't know of such a thing. unless it was picked too early and just not ripening?

i also tried a green almond - never saw it before.
apparently you can eat the whole thing - it's a young almond, fuzzy shell, pics online

Does it look like this fresh?

It might be a bullock's heart, same family as cherimoya. The family is called "annona", or "custard apple". I've never seen this specific type of annona, but my advice is: don't open it until it's definitely soft.

There are many, many annonas. My favorite is rollinia deliciosa. It has the consistency/taste of a thick, creamy, cherry pie filling (but also sort of sweet pineappley):

Here is a YouTube video of another annona: a marang. This video was produced and sent to me by a friend, Jeff Sellers, who lives in the Philippines.

Jeff would also like to invite everyone here to visit this page on tropical fruit from his website:

What state are you in? What climate grows this? Why didn't you ask the farmer you bought it from? Whenever I find something amazing, I ask my farmers.

I can appreciate being anonymous, but not revealing what climate you live in makes for very confusing dialogue. I bet if you and JTP would reveal to each other where you lived, you would be fast friends, because the understanding of each other's climate and resources would explain why each of you maintains the diet you do. I have to say that I am impressed with young JTP improving his health as he has, given where he lives and I understand the percentage of fat he uses, based on the availability of resources to him.

Here you are and JTP are bickering about percentages of fat on a pure raw diet, when we have one forum member in Scandanavia who simply cannot afford to be all raw at all due to sky high prices. So, climate, food availability and season is so key to the conversation about diet.
