Only think I'd add is that you have to be careful if they have their teeth. Having them suck on fruit for a long period of time can actually rot their tiny teeth. I know a mom this happened to.

i suppose you could wadd up lettuce or other greens into it too smiling smiley

i dont really buy into the idea that fruit rots teeth .. i think poor oral hygiene and poor internal hygiene rots teeth .. i know parents around here with little kids who are nearly 5 years old and still dont know about brushing and rinsing .. seems kinda weird to me ..

ok im probably gonna get lynched for my stantz on this now tongue sticking out smiley

No lynching here. I completely agree with you and had a friend years ago that used exactly that same gadget for both her babies to get them started on fruits and to knaw on soft veggies. They were both extremely healthy, ruddy, strong babies and LOVED eating fruits and veggies raw. She fed them 100% vegan and probably about 80% raw without any salt or stimulating seasonings and the difference in those children was astounding. I highly recommend it.

As for the teeth concern, I think we would use common sense just like we would for adults. For one thing, I don't believe in raising children to eat between meals (make that a DOUBLE-lynching!! *giggle*), just as adults should learn to structure their eating habits as well. Just as adults brush their teeth after eating, so should children. So, not only should the child not be noshing on food ALL DAY LONG, they should be taught to brush their teeth (with the appropriate equipment for their age/size) just like ADULTS. It's just plain common sense.

Yikes. I hear the cries of the lynch mob!!! *giggle*

=p

thats cool about your friend and her babies Plainly smiling smiley smiling smiley yea i beleive a diet with all the pablum and cows milk and formula crap is probably not the best thing for oral health or internal health coupled with bad cleaning habits smiling smiley i cant help but wonder if fruit gets a bad rap when other scenarios arent subjected smiling smiley

What you said just totally supported what I said. If you let a very young child with new teeth suck on raw fruit for hours at a time, its teeth are going to decay.

had one, baby thought it was the stupidest thing ever. sad, i thought it was so cool.
the thing is, you don't give it to your baby for hours. first, fruit spoils after a while. second what baby in the Entire World pays attention to ANYTHING for more than 3 seconds i ask you? seriously, consult a mom when making these assumptions, i've just sat here reading this thread laughing like a hyena at most of these posts (in a good way folks) as i imagine my son or daughter keeping something in hand or mouth for any extended period of time. more like "mmm, num. a snack. Oh LOOK! a block. mmm, block. Oh LOOK! a book. mmm book. Oh LOOK! a shoe." and so on every 10 seconds are soo.

and i can tell you all from personal experience that thinking that breast milk prevents decay and NOT BRUSHING BABY TEETH 'cause you think you don't really have to is what causes cavities. it's not fruit (unless you put a baby to bed with a bottle of juice because, duh, that's just foolish). i didn't brush little man's baby teeth. i certainly do brush this next kids teeth though, you betcherbutt i do.

That is what my friend did who rotted her kid's teeth. She put them down for naps with one of those things filled with fruit. The kids sucked on it until they went to sleep.

oh man molli, that's like the number one thing every single baby book, nurse, baby well attendant, etc says not to do, put baby down with anything but water for naps. how many times did i hear that lecture? must've been dozens, i swear.

jodi, i still think that thing is cool. i sent it to my sister for her new baby, hope she has more luck with it than i did! you can put the handle in the fridge or freezer, it's got a gel pack inside that gets cold and keeps things fresh for longer. nifty little invention, that. but, just like the sling, my kids weren't having it sad smiley. oh well...
