Gac: Fruit From Heaven

The Gac fruit—regarded as “Fruit from Heaven”—is grown in Northern Vietnam and turns a vibrant orange when ripe. In fact, its vibrant color indicates the presence of powerful antioxidants, particularly beta-carotene and lycopene. Lycopene is also found in other vibrant-colored fruits like tomatoes, pink grapefruit, and watermelon.

Antioxidants aid the body by protecting against attack by free radicals. Essentially, the more antioxidants you consume, the more your body can keep free radicals in check. According to research, a typical carotenoid molecule can “sustain more than 20 free radical hits before it becomes completely destroyed! In this way, carotenoids support the entire antioxidant network.”

In addition to the large concentration of powerful antioxidants in the Gac fruit, Dr. Steven Schwartz, of Ohio State University, shares an interesting tidbit that demonstrates something unique within the Gac fruit: “Many fruits and vegetables are rich in beneficial carotenoids, but most fruits and vegetables are virtually fat free, which may limit the body’s ability to absorb some of these nutrients.” Research shows, however, that there is 7-10% fat in Gac fruit, making the nutrients highly absorbable, similar to how nutrients in an avocado are more highly bioavailable because of the fat content.

One articled featured on the news several years back highlighted Gac’s beta-carotene content:

Because of its unusually high concentration of beta-carotene, Gac fruit is a valuable aid in preventing or treating vitamin A deficiency. One study of children conducted in Vietnam measured blood plasma levels of vitamin A before and after the consumption of a Gac fruit extract. The study showed that vitamin A levels increased with supplementation. In many developing countries, vitamin A deficiency is epidemic. Such deficiency can cause poor night vision, blindness, reduced ability to fight infections, higher rates of maternal mortality, poor embryonic growth, and reduced lactation. Supplementation with Gac fruit extract can alleviate chronic vitamin A deficiency, and help to reduce these health problems.

How can you ensure you get the benefits of the hard-to-find Gac fruit in your daily diet? Bowl of Heaven’s Maq 7 contains the Vietnamese superfruit and is used in almost all of our acai bowls and smoothies. Head into any one of our locations to get a bowl or a smoothie and get the benefits of Gac; or, better yet, pick up a bottle of Maq 7 so you can drink some every day.

With the collaboration of San Eigen FFI, a leading Japanese color company, we have analyzed the fruit GAC, a fruit used to make sticky rice in Vietnam, the concentration of lycopene in the edible portion of the fruit. Gac 10 times the concentration of fruits and vegetables is considered a source rich in Lycopene y Gac fruit is considered a valuable new source of antioxidants for prevention of complications of diabetes and other chronic diseases. "

The conclusion was drawn from the study "The ability to prevent diabetic complications with antioxidants in the diet". According to the evidence in this work in the diabetes are two important reactions that occur is Glycation and Lipid Peroxidation. These two reactions are thought to cause complications in the blood vessels, skin, kidneys, retina, peripheral nerves and the lens of diabetics. In Vietnam, there is a lot of scientific research proving that Gac oil is a drug, a food that has the effect of preventing and curing diseases.
