Can't seem to get good coconuts...

I have purchased coconuts at my local natural food store a few times now, & have left them on the counter for maybe a week. When I open them, they are moldy inside. Should they go bad this soon, or should I be refrigerating them/storing them in a different manner?

From outside appearances, they look good. They are solid, the water inside sloshes around & is clear when we open the eyes to drain it. I drank a few ounces about an hour ago before I started to peel the meat out & realized it was moldy between the shell & meat, so we will see if I suffer any ill effects...

if their moldy dont eat em ..
i try to use mine up withen a day of buying them so i dont know what their shelf life is , but by the time its been picked to the time you get em on your counter its probably been awhile

maybe take them back to where you got them , its possible if you are having that many that are spoiled maybe the supplier is giving your store bad cocos on a regular basis

on the plus side .. if its going moldy , chances are you havent gotten one thats been formaldehyed treated to preserve it FROM going moldy so thats a good thing ! ;p maybe just try to eat them up faster and not have them linger so long smiling smiley

Coconuts are always hit and miss. I try to buy from a location that goes through coconuts quickly....and find ones that seem to be the least old. I always make sure (like with watermelons) that where I buy them from will take them back if I get a bad one! Heh..heh....so no big deal.

OK anyone, what's wrong with the pink coconut water?
Here in the Caribbean we get different types, colours, flavours, sweetness and I've drunken pinkish water before to no ill effect that I can remember.
I usually get problems when they're cloudy cloudy. A very effective diuretic, winking smiley

I've seen pink and purple in the flesh of the mature coconuts we
get up north from the Dominican Republic. It's a sign of fermentation,
seems to me, at least with this variety. These coconuts are under negative
pressure when perfectly fresh and will make a hissing sound when
piercing an 'eye'. If there's no 'hiss' it's fair warning this variety will
be in some stage of fermentation, which I don't mind as long as it's
not foul tasting, and so far haven't had adverse reactions to them,
knock on wood. I've had more luck with coconuts colored more beige
than brown.

Young coconuts are another matter.
