Ha-ha! I have a friend who hates cilantro also; at restaurants, she has automatically fished it out of her food(if it's veg) and put it on my plate. Now, she just says to whoever is taking the order, "um, the cilantro that's supposed to be in my food, put it in hers instead[points at me]." They usually comply.

My mom always insisted that cilantro tasted like when you accidentally swallow a mosquito. But I insist that it's a necessary ingredient for some dishes, like a good raw gauacamole . . . you'd miss it if it weren't there. If you can't avoid it, Jodi, just focus on thoughts of its medicinal qualities, you know, close your eyes and think of England ; )

I must be backwards on this one, because I love cilantro; I use it in many smoothies & juices. I like the unique flavor it adds.

Well on further investigation , apparently there is a gene ... much like the gene that allows some people to smell that asparagus pee

that gene either gives you the taste to "like" cilantro

apparently people who like cilantro dont get the same taste sensation as we do

heres what its like .. when it lands in my mouth my tongue wants to roll back like a slingshot and hurl it out as fast as it can ! tongue sticking out smiley its got this weird antisepticc soapy urinal cake smelling kinda taste lol

Hey, what do you have against cilantro? It is the secret ingredient in many dishes! It is ubiquitous in Mexican/Hispanic cuisine, and is also used in Chinese/Thai dishes ("Chinese parsley" is its other name, doncha know!)

But seriously, cilantro removes heavy metals. I like AC/DC as much as the next person, but...

I've detested cilantro for years and even joined 'ihatecilantro.com'! (Yes, sad...)

However, I managed to tolerate a little of it in a Thai soup last year and now use it very occasionally.

I even went to a Greek restaurant once in the UK, asked for a Greek salad minus the olives and feta, and it was covered in cilantro! I had to pick it all out. I've holidayed on at least ten Greek islands and have never had cilantro on a Greek salad there.

It would be good if those who like it could remember that, when serving food to others, those who don't like it, don't just 'not like it' - it tastes foul to them.

My mother is in the same boat as Debbie. She could never stand food that had any cilantro in it, but somehow that reaction got mellowed, so she doesn't mind it much anymore. She's hardly a cilantro-lover, but she doesn't have the same strong reaction to it that she once did.

For myself, I have always loved the stuff. Two whole bunches of cilantro is one of my favorite green components for smoothies. I recognize that the thought is probably horrific to many, so I apologize if I grossed anyone out.

As ubiquitous as cilantro is in various cuisines, notably Mexican and Thai, I think it's important to keep in mind the strong reaction so many people have to it.

I don't think there is anything so odd about not liking cilantro - it could easily be dill or fennel etc - they are all strong tastes that produce extreme reactions in some people.

Thanks Jodi. Never knew this about cilantro. I just thought everyone loved it like I do. Very interesting! (Will definitely keep this in mind when preparing food for others)

cilantro is an acquired taste...personally i love it.

but to each his/her own.

cilantro has a very distinct strong flavor.

there is this health foods market i go to called "Mothers", and

in their deli/food section they have a wonderful raw green soup

made of: kale, spinich, lime, cilantro and avocado...and its all raw!

the cilantro makes this raw soup so good!

FinallyFeelingBetter, I don't have any particular recipe. The cilantro is a strong enough flavor that I don't feel the need to use particularly interesting or expensive fruit combinations.

Common ingredients for me would be 2-3 cups water, 2 bunches cilantro, 2-3 small-medium apples, 1-2 bananas, 1 brazil nut, 1-2 T flax seeds. The brazil nut and flax seeds are just nutritional boosters. I might use other fruit in place of the apples on occasion, but this time of year it's all about the apples. I sometimes replace some or all of the water with juice or coconut water. (Fresh coconuts are hard to come by and expensive in my area, so that's rare.) I save my precious reserve of berries I picked over the summer for smoothies with milder flavored greens.

I love coriander (uk name for cilantro!)!!

I could easily eat that in place of lettuce in a salad, in fact, it'd be nicer!

On the brain training game on the nintendo ds, the professor host character used to gag at the thought of cilantro. Ha ha.

I think cilantro tastes great in small quantity only (in guacamole, as a topping on a salad or raw dish, etc).

To the tune of the song that goes, "You say tomato; I say to-mah-to"...

You say "coriander"
I say, "cilantro"
Use it like parsley
or a versatile plant, oh!
In tex-Mex
In Thai food
In creole
(That's my food)
Some say it tastes more like soap.
In food they cannot cope.

Russians say "kinza"
Some others "culantro"
Love it or hate it
There's no middle ground, though
Indian,
Chinese food,
African -
all these foods...
It is found everywhere
Raw smoothies??!!! Thanks, you needn't share!

I used to really dislike cilantro. Recently though, I've started to warm up to it, and I put it in salads and other vegetable combinations from time to time. Lately I've been buying it regularly to put in my carrot/apple/ginger juice, because I know it'll draw heavy metals out of my system.
