Wild bananas have lots of seeds. Cultivated bananas are seedless. The plant's purpose in producing fruit is to spread its seeds. Thanks for posting this. My understanding of it is that Brome is correct. Bananas are the fruit of the banana plant. The banana plant is an herbaceous perrenial. I think Wikipedia says it very accurately: "Banana is the common name for herbaceous plants of the genus Musa and for the fruit they produce." Just a guess, but maybe people sometimes get the wrong impression when they learn that banana plants are not fruit trees. They might hear that and think, "Oh, so bananas aren't fruits."
