Banana is Not a Fruit--- ?!?! Interesting NaturalNews article

Interesting premise I've never heard before in a NaturalNews article.

Excerpt: "The banana that we eat with our morning cereal has been used as a medicine around the world for centuries. Known in Latin as Musa sapienta, the banana is not actually a fruit but an herbaceous perennial. Alone and combined with healing botanicals, the banana can be used to heal ulcers and asthma, or to cure cataracts and other eye problems. Research has now shown that bananas can lower blood pressure as well as prevent colon cancer. Full of many nutrients and fiber, the banana is not only a food, but also a potent medicine."

Pineapples are also a herbaceous perennial plant and Sugar cane is considered a grass.

There is nothing like a fresh sweet pineapple also sugar cane is refreshing once in a while.

But bananas are the best just peel it open and eat as is no tools needed.

Cherimoya,

Love Peace and Happiness,

cherimoya-- I agree. Pineapples are fabulous. I wouldn't care if botanists labeled them as 'plant of unknown origin and species from Mars.' I'd still love them. Same for bananas. I love them too, as long as I blend them into a smoothie. I don't like them alone.

then there is the question if tomatoes are a fruit or a vegetable. Also rhubarb, I had a discussion with someone on that topic. He thought the botanical definition was not as important as how something is customarily used.

The banana is indeed a fruit. From: [waynesword.palomar.edu]

Quote

I. Simple Fruits: A single ripened ovary from a single flower.
A. Fleshy Fruits: All of most of the ovary wall (pericarp) is soft or fleshy at maturity.
1. Berry: Entire pericarp is fleshy, although skin is sometimes tough; may be one or many seeded. E.g. grape, tomato, papaya, pomegranate, sapote, persimmon, guava, banana and avocado. The latter two fruits are often termed baccate (berry-like). [The banana fruit is a seedless, parthenocarpic berry developing without pollination and fertilization. In the pomegranate, the edible part is the fleshy layer (aril) around each seed

Wild bananas have lots of seeds. Cultivated bananas are seedless. The plant's purpose in producing fruit is to spread its seeds. Hence some might consider any seedless fruit to be a spiritless abortion and unworthy to be called a fruit.

Kwan,

Thanks for posting this. My understanding of it is that Brome is correct.

Bananas are the fruit of the banana plant. The banana plant is an herbaceous perrenial.

I think Wikipedia says it very accurately: "Banana is the common name for herbaceous plants of the genus Musa and for the fruit they produce."

Just a guess, but maybe people sometimes get the wrong impression when they learn that banana plants are not fruit trees. They might hear that and think, "Oh, so bananas aren't fruits."
