Turmeric repairs intestinal barrier function

Turmeric has the most effect when it is not absorbed. Curcumin is in turmeric.

We established curcumin-mediated decrease in the release of gut bacteria-derived lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into circulation by maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier function as the mechanism underlying the attenuation of metabolic diseases (diabetes, atherosclerosis, kidney disease) by curcumin supplementation precluding the need for curcumin absorption.

Increased levels of circulating bacterial lipopolysaccharide or LPS are causally linked to the development of diet-induced metabolic diseases (diabetes and atherosclerosis), chronic inflammatory diseases (chronic kidney disease, arthritis), several neurological diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's) and cancers. Gut bacteria are the source of LPS and it is translocated to systemic circulation due to disruption of the intestinal barrier function.

breach of the intestinal barrier in these diseases leads to activation of immune cells in the lamina propria by interaction with gut bacteria derived lipopolysaccharide (LPS) resulting in the secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators that perpetuate local inflammation.

In addition to the obvious effects of intestinal barrier function in modulating the local intestinal inflammation, dysfunctional intestinal barrier is increasingly being shown to underlie the development of a variety of diseases and pathological conditions where systemic LPS plays a causative role.

High fat high cholesterol containing western type diets responsible for the obesity epidemic and metabolic syndrome have been shown to increase intestinal permeability resulting in release of LPS into systemic circulation leading to metabolic endotoxemia 36 69 70

in humans, obese phenotype is associated with endotoxemia 76 77

The presence of gut-derived bacteria LPS in systemic circulation, is also identified as a causal or complicating factor in diverse diseases such as autism, 78 Alzheimer's disease 79 as well as asthma. 80 Increased intestinal permeability with high levels of circulating LPS and low levels of LPS binding protein are also seen in patients with Parkinson's disease. 81 Abnormal intestinal permeability similarly plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of several autoimmune diseases. 82 By demonstrating the presence of significantly higher levels of circulating gut bacterial products in subjects with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, Fotis et al reinforced the concept that the intestine is a source of immune stimulation in arthritis. 83

curcumin initiates or modulates several signaling pathways that ultimately lead to preventing the disruption of intestinal barrier function induced by external dietary factors or endogenous events such as ischemia/reperfusion injury.

This is most interesting indeed.

For the gut, the best aminoacid is glutamine. The best rawfood with glutamine could be cabbage.

That's good to know about the raw cabbage.

But this -

"We established curcumin-mediated decrease in the release of gut bacteria-derived lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into circulation by maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier function as the mechanism underlying the attenuation of metabolic diseases (diabetes, atherosclerosis, kidney disease) by curcumin supplementation precluding the need for curcumin absorption."

I guess they means curcumin supplements. I'm down on supplements because of the fillers. Although maybe there's a curcumin powder that someone could use instead. Either way it's dead, so you'd think it would be good to compare the curcumin supplement to just eating raw turmeric root itself - like in a recipe.

Curcumin is a molecule inside the root turmeric.

Turmeric without curcumin has a bigger positive effect than curcumin alone. Extracting curcumin is a cultural misconception. Some companies create a product that way and make a bottle. But since the people buying it have the same culture, they think that it is good. The real magical secret is in the whole turmeric (hundreds of different parts). But nobody could make money selling turmeric by the pound. So they divide it into pieces and make different bottles (turmerones, etc)

So maybe we should just buy some raw turmeric roots and chew on them and call it a day.

By the way, the part of the plant under discussion is actually the rhizome. The root, called YU JIN, is the part that grows straight down, not so horizontally as the rhizome (JIANG HUANG), and has somewhat different qualities. It is not bright orange in color. As they say, "look it up". americandragon.com is a good place to go, tho I first got my info from my herb book by Leslie Tierra, L.Ac.

Yeah, if you have access to the whole root that is better than in powder form.
