Thanks for the pome, la veronique. Many parts are edible.

Nancy Reagan had a solution for drug addiction: just say no. The problem with this idea is that addiction, by definition, effectively prevents you from saying no. If you could say no, you would not be addicted.

It is usually thought preferable, to be aware and impeccable, than to be deluded and failing. But, it's not a choice. You can't simply decide to be smart and be whatever it is that you thought smart was.

A person who is not intimidated by their attackers, and is supported by their community, would not need to react to their attackers. It would be inappropriate for such a person to act in a way that resembles a reaction to being attacked. Cultivating a demeanor that incorporates that misplaced reaction could be pointless.

A person who is intimidated and not supported by their community can retreat into agony, or they can meet their attackers. In this moment of confronting your attackers, being part of a minority group that is under attack, it is a healthy reaction to demonstrate (mainly to yourself) that you are not defeated by their cruelty.

But, "queer" and "bitch" are convenient for this discussion, because mother dogs are fierce and beautiful, and being unusual is not anything bad.

If you were being called stupid, it would probably not make you feel confident about yourself, to call yourself stupid. And, it would not likely impress your attackers much.

Let me say in defense of Ingrid, a few things:

1. nobody cares about anything except sex or violence.
2. the video is more powerful than the word.
3. outrageous acts command attention, and the more
attention one pays, the longer the memory lingers
4. some people require repeated exposure before the
message sinks in

These are her guiding principles. We might not agree
on all of the specifics but I am absolutely certain that
her heart is in the right place. Have you seen the video,
"I am an Animal" ? It's on youtube. Although she is the
chief of a multimillion dollar organization, she keeps only
$20K for herself and she lives very simply. She definitely
practices what she preaches.

I almost took a job with PETA. But then I got a decent offer
locally.

I missed this one. I assume this comment was directed at me? I don't think it's impossible for a model to have a knowledge of nutrition, but the industry as a whole values thinness over health. Models are notorious for using all sorts of means including starving, vomiting, smoking, etc. to keep themselves thin. I don't think that this is a good 'qualification' for dispensing diet advice, yet it seems that sometimes this is thrown around as one of the credentials of the Skinny Bitch authors.

To me, Vegan is a mindset, not health. Trick yourself into going vegan so you can lose weight. The vegans I know are mostly fat. My sister went vegan and gained 20 lbs. It's too easy to screw up a vegan diet. For example, "I can have french fries because it's vegan"... or I can eat chips because it's vegan".... and crackers so on and so on...

You "think" you are doing good for yourself but there is a lot more to health then just quitting MEAT.

Go raw and find your true colors.

Agreed. I don't call myself "Vegan". I went from eating meat/cooked right into raw. I didn't get caught up in the Vegetarian/Vegan thing. I don't eat meat anymore but I skipped a whole phase that most people start with. Then again I usually rat "raw" but I don't call myself "raw" either. Screw labels..labels create fads or spin off diets which is why there's 50 styles of eating "raw" now.

I hear you, Clank, because for a long time I was a vedge who barely ate veggies! However, even with that, I still feel like I was ahead of the curve by not eating meat (although I really overdid the dairy and feel that it did a number on me back then). I know this man who is 60, a longtime vedge and won't eat salads. He basically eats pizza and other things with cheese. Funny thing is that he won't buy greens unless they are in plastic because of "germs." He is an "interesting" fellow but he's still doing his thing regardless!

I love this book.

I read it while on the train and had to stop from laughing out loud! The humour is not for everyone, and I think it was better received outside the US as the humour is more UK/Aust. It's laughing at ITSELF!

But it was preaching to the converted for me. The great thing is that I have come across MANY people influenced to go vegan because of this one book. People who were not swayed by the animal argument, the enviro argument, etc. People who would often would never have even entertained the thought that veganism is a valid way of life otherwise. They came to the book via it being a diet book and learned a whole lot more in the act of reading it. It made them more AWARE. That's a precious thing to any of us out there advocating for awareness.

I'm pretty open minded, I think there isn't *one* way of reaching people and getting them to entertain the idea of adopting a vegan lifestyle, same with adopting a raw foods lifestyle.

Different approaches for different types of people. This approach was highly successful for a section of society that has as yet been totally oblivious to this way of life. WIN!

You gotta be open minded to change over to vegan.
You gotta have an open heart to feel whats right.
You gotta have a sense of humor to appreciate 'skinny bitch'.

Why? How does that fit into your 'as judgmental as you want to be' view? Honestly, Harley, you seem to turn on a dime when it's you that is scrutinized rather than doing the scrutinizing.

I don't think it's the readers that lack the sense of humor; it's Rory (and you). Had she had one when she wrote the book she would have needed to resort to derision and insults.

I wish my mama was a skinny bitch! Then she wouldnt have heart disease, have to use a walker and be 5 minutes away from a nervous breakdown each day. sad smiley

I gave her a copy cos I cared and mamma said 'I need my protein now Harley, carbs make people fat!' I said 'Mum, but your fat and are so unfit that your sedentary lifestyle is literally killing you? What gives?'

How old is she? Probably not too old since you are not either...Sorry to hear that...People get fixated on certain ideas about health that are not particularly true.
