They common belief is they are easily digestible when cooked than raw.

True or untrue?

Perhaps a different way to look at these foods is that in their natural raw state, they are not a good food for humans, who do not the digestive capapcity to digest legumes without technology. Good foods for humans are foods that in their raw natural state, taste good to us without spices or condiments, and digest easily.

I love fresh peas and have no problem digesting them. I sprout lentils and love the taste and have never had a problem digesting them, either. I also make hummus from sprouted chickpeas and it digests just fine. I don't know whether they are good foods for other humans, but they seem like good food for me.

I eat fresh chickpeas when ever I can get them (no soaking, no sprouting). I've made hummas and chana masala with them. When I find some again I might try and make falafal with them. I've never had any problem digesting them.

I always eat them sprouted now, I don't seem to have any problems digesting them, infact a cup of chick peas has something crazy like 35g of fiber but it doesn't seem to cause a problem at all with digestion.
I love eating Raw hummus with sprouted chick peas it is the best I've ever tasted.
I haven't done sprouted black beans or kidney beans yet, but I have had sprouted adzuki, mung and lentils too, and no problems with these either.

Mmmmmmmmm...chana masala! One of my favorites, but I have not had it since I went raw. Can I please have your recipe for this? And where do you find the fresh chickpeas? Not sure I have seen them around.

Sure, my chana masala recipe is in this thread:

If the sauce comes out a little bitter, add a little agarve or date
to sweeten it up a little.

I've found fresh chickpeas in farms markets in California, but I think the best bet is mexican/latino grocery/produce stores. Some times middle eastern or indian stores will carry them as well. Found them both pre-packaged and loose/bulk. When picking them, try to pick the greenist ones, once they start to turn pale or yellow the chickpeas inside will be a little bitter/starchy.

Cheers,
Ian.

I would like to know about black beans...can they be sprouted? I really like them cooked and am thinking about making them from time to time. I'll have to do an experiment and see if they soften enough to be edible after a good long soak.
