Trying to get an answer about greens
Posted by: johndela1 ()

I posted a while back asking what nutrients greens have that fruits don't. It seemed to turn into an argument. I am not trying to be hostile or convert anyone. I am simply trying to be as scienintific as possible about my food choices. It isn't enough to be told greens are centering or have good energy. I simply want to know of at least one nutrient that is found in greens that isn't found in fruit. This doesn't mean I am trying to tell people to eat meat. I say this because it was intreperted this way by someone earlier. My goal is to have a close to ideal diet. People in the raw food community seem to really advocate the consumption of greens becaues they say they are high in minerals. My question is: which ones?

I don't mind debating, but this question really isn't a debate, I just want to know at least one nutrient that I can get from greens that I can't from fruit.

Science is all about research and debating findings and theories. If you don't want the debating, don't ask for anything scientific, ask for opinions. winking smiley

Ian,

expierinces can be decieving

I prefer to look at the body as a biochemical machine. If one can show something in a observable and repeatable way I find little room to debate.

I am not totally opposed to debating though. It just seems like many people take any form of disagreement as a personal attack.

Go to [www.nutritiondata.com] and type in the name of the green you are interested in a look at the data. There isn't a specific answer to this question as you are asking about greens in general compared to fruit in general. The answer to that question can only be, greens have more minerals than fruit. It's not necessarily that you can't get a certain mineral from fruit, just that the quanties in greens are much higher.

And if somebody can show something completely different in a observable and repeatable way, there is need for more research and debate. Hey, you're debating debate with me. ;-)

Peace,
Ian.

i know that the rinds of watermelon have some chlorophyll
but in general, greens have far more chlorophyll
uhhh... that means a lot to me though not sure if that means anything to you or if i'm just pointing out the obvious

also, as far as which veggies have more minerals
i think parsley has more minerals than most fruit

though we could always have a "debate" around parsley due to the controversy surrounding the oxalic acid content etc.

If i remember correctly Zuccini also contains some chlorophyll (also in the skin). Chlorophyll was the only thing I could think of that is abundent in greens but harder to come across in fruits. But since the question was phrased as "that I can't [get] from fruit", and you can get some chlorophyll from some fruits, it still doesn't answer that question.

Personally, I think that most/all minerals will be avaliable in both, certain ones being found in great quantities in one or the other. I think the last thread on this covered that area pretty well.

Can you give me an example of one so I can go look it up?

Zuccini is a fruit

I don't think we need chlorophyll do we? I know people say it builds blood, because it's molecule looks like blood. I never understood why that means anything.

I am not certain there is a nutrient that is only found in greens and not fruit. Fruits tend to have more vitamins, leafy greens tend to have more minerals. For people eating a high fruit diet, it can serve to get 3% to 5% of calories from greens. However, it is totally possible to get everything one needs from fruit only, as there been people who have thrived on a fruit only diet.

All this being said, what is right for you in the moment is something you can only tell by your own personal experience, rather than knowing the nutritional contents of specific greens, Just because a certain food has a tons of valuable nutrients doesn't mean its a good food for you (or anyone for that matter) because the food may also contain toxins. A good example of this is poison oak. Who cares if poison oak is high in Vitamin C or has excellent antioxidants and rarely found phytonutrients?

One thing greens are low on is calories. I have never seen anyone speak of thriving on a long term greens-only diet. Most people who think they are eating high greens and low fruit are actually eating a high fat diet, not a high greens diet, when you take a look at the breakdown of the calories.

I think you are asking a very intelligent question, John.

For what it is worth, my current belief and understanding is that fruit is the food for humans (along with sunlight and fresh air), and green leaves (in small amounts, like medicine) are for healing. One important component of the fruit is the distilled water it contains for hydration of the body.

Occasionally, I will be attracted to the green of celery or to a leaf of a baby beet green and I find that chewing on just a little and swallowing the juice is plenty satisfying and I do not desire much.

I like what Bryan said about paying attention to the needs and experience of your body in the moment.

Hope this helps. . .

smiling smiley

Love,
Julie

chlorophyll helps to oxygenate the blood
oxygen is what the cells need
umm... i think its a good thing
i like to drink my greens
cuz we can't break down the cellulose
and whatnot
though i do eat salads too
but mostly drink em
if i drink fruit juice
uhh.. not a good idea
at least not for me
i prefer to eat fruit instead
too concentrated in sugar to be drinking it
if u have another opinion
i'm open
