I would not be suprised at all if there were economic reasons behind this particular study (and probably over the spinach e-coli scare as well).

I also think it is ridiculous to call all figs everywhere "dangerous" just because of the study of figs (in one area presumable) were found to have high levels of acid rain (I also notice that the original poster hasn't even posted a link to his "study"winking smiley.

However, the goal of science is to be as objective as possible. The scientific method should be held sacred above any desired outcome.

Selective research can produce shewed results of course. I would be very suprised if anyone funded a study on the effects of acid rain on say, corn or wheat.

However, one shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater, IMO.

Wishing you peace, happiness and safe figs. smiling smiley

jono,
I buy my figs at Whole Foods or a local (Seattle) co-op called PCC. In both places, figs are sold in bulk so you can sort through and buy only the best. I don't buy them when I have to buy them pre-packaged. Either way, they are not cheap. In peak season I've paid as little as $3 per pound but most often it's double that. Still, cheaper than meds and health insurance. smiling smiley

Warm wishes,

No, I don't eat dried fruit. They're fresh, and almost gone for the season. sad smiley

Fresh figs sound good, but we don't have any here. I stopped eating dried figs a while back. They just didn't taste good.

I think that lots of these research projects are designed by the meat and dairy industry to scare people away from fruit and veggies. I think the worst thing about figs, however, is the sulphur dioxide that is used as a preservative in them. Who wants to eat sulphur dioxide?

Ron,
Just to clarify, we're talking about fresh figs, which generally aren't treated with anything. It is possible to get dried figs without chemical preservatives, you just have to check the ingredients label.
