Sweet potatos

Now that I'm switching to a raw diet, I am reading conflicting information about whether or not sweet potatos can be safely consumed raw. I thought they were really healthy to eat, but a little afraid to try them raw based on what I am eating. Why is there so much conflicting info out there about whether some foods can be safely consumed raw? Is there a particular list on the internet that many of you rely that is considered to be reliable about what can be consumed raw? I could probably easily give up sweet potatoes, but if they are nutritious and good for us to eat, I'd rather not.

I also like to add sweet potatoes to my juice. nice and grounding smiling smiley

I don't find them particularly easy to digest if I just eat them though. I like to 'process' them a bit, for instance I might grate them and add them to souerkraut, or at least marinade for a few hours, or dehydrate.

In terms of raw foods to stay away from, definitely raw kidney beans is a no-no. Other beans (such as aduki, mung etc) require sprouting to make them palatable.

there's probably other stuff... can't think of any off the top of my head right now though!

ooh - just thought of one - rhubarb leaves. And also white potatoes. (although some people say these are good for you raw, so that's confusing! I wouldn't fancy eating them myself though) smiling smiley

I like grating sweet potato beet and carrot together with a little ginger evoo and lemon... and let them marinate for a bit... yummy i don't eat them daily but i do enjoy it... i've heard they help the body to produce it's own protein... but i didn't research that it was a passing comment from a shaman friend of mine...

Sweet spud is fine, and I regularly grate them into my veg salad in place of carrot for a change. Also, white spud sliced thin and dipped in apple cider vinegar is quite tart but different. But I haven't tried it for ages smiling smiley

i love eating raw sweet potatoes, grated with stuff... or just cut up with my other veggies to put with a dip (tahini dip for example)... or i can just munch on them on their own. love them! smiling smiley

Can you dehydrate slices of sweet potatos and put some sort of oil and salt on them and make them like chips? Gosh ... I hadn't thought about making veggie chips until now ...

Why would you want to add dead calories into your diet? Sweet potatos and raw as well? I ve tried that and i dont think they add anything beneficial. I would rather invest those calories on other nutri-dense foods.

Dead calories? Please explain. No raw fruit or vegetable that isn't toxic has dead calories, as, say, refined white bread does. Even gently dehydrated, the nutrients in sweet potato are bioavailable: Beta Carotene, folate, Vit D and E, etc. Not "dead calories" by my definition!

For those who need extra calories, especially if you are Juice Fasting or Juice Feasting as I prefer to call it, Sweet Potatoes have 540 calories per pint and are extremely helpful for those who are not getting enough calories. Whenever you have a low caloric day and your Carbohydrate Fuel Tank is on low, Sweet Potato Juice is a great way to catch up on calories and if you mix it with Carrot Juice in a 50-50 ratio, you’re getting 430 calories per pint.

I meant empty calories. Its a carb source and carbs are bad for you. Vitamin D is found in trace amounts it can as well be said that it's nonexistent. The other nutrients you have listed are found in other types of foods that are more palatable and beneficial.

The first part is odd to read at a forum for raw vegans, but maybe you do not mean this as categorically as it reads.

As to the second part, one can justify avoiding all kinds of nutritious foods using this rationalization, and that runs counter to the goals of most of us here.

Tamukha,

The human body is made from minerals, water, fats (80% of your brain is fat), proteins. I dont see where carbs come into the equation; carbs are only there to fuel you and not to build you health and strength and longevity. At least that's what i would like to think.

If you're a marathon runner, then yeah, perhaps carbs are your best source of fuel, but i dont think you or me are as a matter of fact.

I am not against eating a raw sweet potato tbh, i ve tried that before, its just a raw sweet potato in the end, but i would rather eat other foods that build my muscles, cells, tissues, and preserve my memory and brain functions, whilst also protecting my body from oxidants effects.

I think me and you agree on this subject. You like to add sweet potatos to your diet, i am reluctant to add empty calories to my diet (if i am to eat 3000 to 3500 calories per normal day, i dont want to waste 500 of them on sweet potatos and nut if you know what i mean. that's my theory in theory at least) but i dont mind having it every once in a while with some friends etc.

That the brain is composed of fat does not mean that the brain runs on fat; the brain runs on carbohydrates. Just one of many respects in which we do not differ from other primates.

I actually am not fond of raw sweet potatoes, although I have them occasionally with no ill effects. I totally get that someone may not like their flavor or texture or whatever. Be to say that they are empty calories, implying that the nutrients in them are not numerous nor bioavailable, doesn't makes sense to me. To be sure, many of their nutrients can be had elsewhere, but this elsewhere is likely outside the plant kingdom and thus off-limits to most of us here.

And why raw sweet potato is bad for digestion? Maybe it is, I just never heard this before, can you provide links? For what it's worth, sweet potato constituted about 93% of Okinawa people traditional daily diet.

Personally i find raw sweet potato exceptionally yummy, especially in a mash, combined with leafy salad with tomatoes. I'm considering making it one of the staples in my diet, including sweet potato greens, that is why this thread surprised me a lot!
