I like Spirulina, Chlorella is also good, i prefer Chlorella as it really helped bring my heavy metal level down and as such i felt instant benefits from it.

Thanks!

I read somewhere about China and the heavy metal pollution there. They linked it to using solid fuel (coal) for heating. Apparently, coal has heavy metals and these become air bone when burnt. Then the metals end up in the soil or in the lungs.

BEIJING | Sun Nov 6, 2011 9:04pm EST

(Reuters) - About one tenth of China's farmland is polluted by lead, zinc and other heavy metals to "striking" levels exceeding official limits, a government expert said according to reports on Monday.

Produce from China maybe cheaper but watch out. There some places starting to sell produce from China in the US because of the low price but they are not tested for heavy metals (expensive)

Whilst i agree there is alot of poorly manufactured and tested produce that comes out of China, i also feel that its very overblown.

Which is why its always best to deal with reputable manufacturers and importers, the lengths that you have to go to especially to gain organic certification with spirulina and chlorella make it near impossible to get poor grade or polluted productsmiling smiley.

welcome. On your journey for supplemental protein, consider hemp seed, mediterranean pine nut, edameme, and sunflower seeds as good raw whole foods to help supplement your intake. hemp seed may be the best of the bunch. Vitacost has 3 lbs for $34.06k, a little more than $11 per pound. [www.vitacost.com]

Best.

Whilst i do agree about the blue green algae such as klamath lake algae containing toxic microcystins which can damage the nervous system and liver, i don't agree with the Spirulina mention on the whole.

It largely depends on where the algae is sourced, using a reputable manufacturer who has to follow extremely strict guidelines minimizes any risk of contaminents such as heavy metals and other toxic byproducts. The problem with blue green algae such as klamath lake likes alot in where it is sourced, i.e a lake which is anything but pristine and clean as stated by the manufacturer.

Any food from water based sources has the potential for contamination again largely depending on where its sourced. Whilst organic certification is not the bee all and end all, in the case of Spirulina there are further quality requirements so it helps to purchase Organic aswell.

Chris,

You may be right. I do not know. Under each post, there is a sources cited that references the claims made in the video. The first is a case study in Greece. I haven't followed up on the other two.

Panchito. Nutiva is a solid player. Looks like a good price. I'd say go for it. vitacost is a good alternative to amazon for the same product which ever one has the best terms. .

I started taking seaweed last weekend. I mixed some with a banana smoothy. It was like eating a nugget of something good. I felt like I ate something my body needed. But instead of feeling full of energy, I started feeling tired, which makes sense since I did sleep little the previous nights (weekend). Then today I am feeling great and full of energy. Now my stools come out like from The Hulk, super green smiling smiley Dang! never seen that before. I was surprised at how much green a smoothy of 10 bananas gets with only a table spoon of that stuff.

How does one make a smoothy of 10 bananas? Is this for how many people?

??? I cut the bananas with the fingers in three pieces each and I fill up the blender. I add ~6-8 dates if the bananas are not very sweet. One person, 10 minutes or less to drink while doing something else smiling smiley

You need POWER

I also forgot to say that I use a high speed blender. At low speed, the thick viscosity does not allow the mix to move well. At high speed, you can see the up-down waves and everything is pulverized. This is my blender:

I don't eat it three times a day but it does help to push the calories up and it is cheap! I eat other stuff too like salads, many many mangos, pineapples, juices, nuts, etc.

Mangoes, that is really good. For bananas, the second one is too much for me.

I've been trying the hemp seeds with juices and smoothies and I noticed that the gas goes levels up. Does anyone think the extra protein creates gas? What is your theory?

Protein and fat rich foods can cause gas because they are generally harder to digest, i suspect you may have low stomach acid which is the most common cause of gas due to increased fermentation.
