I bought dates on the branch...

Or stem or whatever...Never seen that in my life, have you?

Fresh blonde dates attached to a stem. They were HARD. I saw a woman buying them and asked her if they will ripen on the counter and she said sure.

So most are still hard but one had gotten soft. It didn't taste like the dates I am used to. Strange but almost a cellular memory...

I used to live in Phoenix. It was normal to see dates on a palm tree provided it was a date palm. It's like seeing grapes on a vine. That's how dates grow but off a tree instead of a plant.

That's great that you got to purchase them off the branch. Hope they taste delicious.

LOL! That sounds sort of pornographic somehow...I tried one and it was kind of weird because I am not used to that level of wetness.

I once bought some fresh dates from a chinese store. They tasted like apples. I remember asking them if they were date dates, or 'chinese dates'. They just said they were dates. I think they were chinese dates. Otherwise called jujubes, and in dried form are used in chinese medicine. They were good, but I was kind of disappointed because people kept telling me that fresh dates were so heavenly. I never see anything like that around here.

I found one that was ripe this morning and it's growing on me. It tasted like butterscotch smiling smiley

I read somewhere that there are hundreds of types of dates and they have different flavors. There is supposed to be a store on Devon Avenue in Chicago, which is heavily populated with Middle-Easterners and Indians and sells many varieties of dates. I think I will go up there sometime in the near future. smiling smiley

But yeah, it's very cool to see dates like that. I would have never guessed they were dates in the first place. And the store also sold dragonfruit that day. I saw cherimoyas for a hot second. It's in a very middle-of-the-road area--not highly diverse in the sense of incredibly varying cultures so it's amazing to see all these exotic fruits!

banana who, they just take a while to ripen. When they are ripe, they look like wet versions of the dried dates you normally buy.

Yes Prana, I am watching them ripen as we speak! smiling smiley I just had a hard time believing they would actually ripen on the counter because they were so hard. There were some already ripened at the store. LOL--what a sticky mess!

You're telling me. They had some at a Persian grocery store and I went nuts. Bought a couple of boxes of them. Absolutely delicious. They also have the dates on the branch, too.

I had to toss them today. My boyfriend tried a "ripe" one and said it was fermented and it was attracting all sorts of fruit flies so I threw it in the trash. sad smiley

Oh well, it's fun to experiment anyway!smiling smiley
