If you are feeding your pets veggies then that falls short of their natural diet.

Just leave these animals in the wild and they know how to take care of themselves.

But if you are feeding them commercial fish and meat then you are contributing to the destruction of the planet.

The fish and meat industry treat animals very poorly.

You are defeating your own principles.

Leave dogs in the wild in populated locations where they'll have to resort to drinking polluted water, eating garbage, and risk getting hit by cars? I don't eat meat, but why is it wrong to kill animals but not wrong to kill plants?

So if you feed your dog a raw bones diet, you are hurting the dog and the planet? Interesting point of view.

My three pound chihuahua will know how to hunt and kill a bird if I leave it out in the woods, but I am sure most domestic animals would know how.

My dogs in Miami used to pick out on the fallen avocados. They do eat veggies, they are dogs. I read that the worlds longest living dog, followed a diet of lentils and rice.

The sad state of animal feeding hurt when you see what is happening.
Cats and dogs are fed dried food containing processed animal fats.
These animals are so sick and most cases they need surgery.
Just pay a visit to animal hospitals in your area.

When I first read this post, I only saw "If you are raw vegan and feed your pet fish"

For people with a pet goldfish, if you feed your goldfish commercial goldfish foods, you too can't be a vegan (you can have a vegan diet though) as you will be buying animal products (mostly likely brine shrimp) in your pet food.

Since I have a cat, and I feed my cat animal products, I cannot call myself vegan, even with my raw vegan / strict vegetarian animal free diet.

I feel guilty sometimes.
When I make my raw juices, smoothies, and salad, I also cook some meat for my dog.
And it is commercial meat with all of the hormones and fats.
I am not really a raw vegan.
I do not know how to feed him raw food.

okay let me get this straight

If.

1> you eat a raw vegan diet

2) but your pet does not have a vegan diet

3) you are no longer considered vegan even if

4) you never consume animal products ... ever

I think the issue is defining veganism beyond diet. That includes clothing, how one earns a living, and I suppose even who you associate with, including the animal kingdom. Especially if it involves preparing food for a pet, or clothing them in non-vegan items, or non-vegan surroundings.

Suppose you worked in a meat packing plant, but followed a strict plant based diet, could you really consider yourself a vegan? The only way I could see someone being strictly vegan and having a meat eating pet would be as follows. You follow a plant based diet, and do not use any animal derived product for clothing, shelter etc...and your pet obtains its own food, and just shares living space with you, willingly, without you going out of your way to get it to your home.

I do however think one can be compassionate in a less then 100% vegan outlook and practice, and live as much as one can on plants and have a pet that doesnt have the same goals or lifestyle.

I don't think anyone supports abortion. There are many though who support a woman's choice.

Which brings up an interesting question: Should eating meat be illegal? If so, would this be a productive solution with positive consequences, or would many people consider this to be "Big Government" interference? (Just as many people feel about government's attempts to deter abortion)

If a vegan opposes a law that mandates a vegan diet, are they "NOT an...ethical vegan"?

And would such a law be effective or ineffective in regulating the activity of those who feel desperate for a hamburger?

I wonder what the libertarian/republican/democratic political parties would think about a law mandating vegan diets for all? (I think we already know)

One down point. If there can be a law mandating vegan diet, could there instead be a law mandating that we all must eat meat?

I am raw vegan for health reasons and because I feel the best on this diet, 100%. Not because I am animal activist necessarily. I did write 100 animal rights letters I posted, I should show you guys, its still up.. I was an activist once a long long time ago.. and was peta protester once too. But now, I put people first always, then animals. I love both. But for many years raw vegans ate honey and that was ok. That was what was popular. Nitpicking about shoes and if you feed your cat tuna..if you even have a cat, vegans are against keeping animals as pets too. Love animals because you love animals not because you hate people.

About the abortion, thats vile, but a womans choice. We dont know how others live. How can you be vegan do that, I think was the question. I think you can be vegan have had abortions..

But I like the idea being offered. That being vegan isnt just about having a tight ass.

Animal socialism is ok when balanced. We are getting there. Our way of life allows us to be vegan.

100 years ago most people were farmers and all they could eat was mud bread with grass baked in it. And blood sausage on special occasions or you died from starvation.

SO in our culture now we should appreciate our choices. And make better ones when we can. And teach by example.

I like pondering this idea, I love all these posts.

I have met guys like this and I like them very much. But its rare. Its civilized to treat animals well. I think. We can only swim upstream for so long. Allowing and still loving, while leading by example...

And a video about vegan food for cats. She is a wonderful caring person, very passionate about the raw vegan lifestyle and saving the dolphins and whales in the Faroe Islands, volunteering for the Sea Shepherds.

Lentils and rice I say, worlds oldest living dog when I googled it ten years ago. Thats what I would do. dogs eat everything, fallen avocados and leftovers.
