Cravings can indicate nutritional deficiencies.

Cheese in particular could mean you are deficient in essential fatty acids, which could definitely be a possibility if you're eating mainly fruit (along with other nutrients). Maybe try adding 1/4 cup of hemp or chia seeds to your regimen every day. You're probably consuming too little fat at only 5%. Along with the hemp or chia seeds, another 1/4 cup of sprouted sunflower seeds may help ease cravings. You don't need to follow the whole 10% fat or lower myth for optimal health.

To eliminate cravings - Eat 100% Raw with No Salt. Use sea vegetables. Cooked food is Addictive and Salt is Addictive. It's like being a smoker or an alcoholic - it's all or nothing. Otherwise you get cravings.

5% fat intake? Why so extreme? Is it any wonder you crave fat?

Purslane is a wonderful weed and microgreen that is really rich in essential fatty acids. They are out not in Vermont. Great way to get healthy fats in a raw veggie form.

Here is the distribution map for Purslane, from the USDA
[plants.usda.gov]

It has a very wide distribution, it looks like All of the United states, and much of Canada.

In my experience l would do the following:

* weekly 40 hour fast
* greatly cut down fruit to almost nothing
* have chlorella, seaweeds, HYDRILLA algae
* fenugreek sprout juice, sunflower juice, weed juices etc
* eat lots of high amino acid content sprouts

The green algaes play a very important role.

Maybe it's partly the textures you are missing. Have you tried substituting the things you are craving with things like nut pate "cheeses" and raw vegan dehydrated crackers and kale chips? These are the things that helped me and many others in the beginning of the raw journey.

i doubt u have an eating disorder
more like your cells are becoming more organized so it knows what it wants
but the residue of what is within
is screaming out for more of the same
keep eating stuff that you know will ultimately benefit you
and then there will come a point where your body will always be singing out for more of the same... good stuff

Actually, it really is for the best, IMO, that your body is warning you early about the hclf diet before the real damage sets in. Count your blessings.

Sunfooddan, how long have you been vegan and raw vegan? If you're just in the beginning, it may take a while before your cravings dissapear. Try to focus on being healthy and whenever you have bad cravings, remember that those foods that you are craving are not good for you, remember how bad you will feel afterwards.

I also eat 90/5/5 and all my bad cravings are gone, and I don't crave fats at all. There was a time at first when I was severely craving bread and polenta and mash potatoes, but they are all gone. I would never trade my banana ice cream and my sweet fruits for all those foods. I would never go back to eating animal products knowing how full of cruelty they are.

Try to think of animals well-being everytime you crave cheese.

It will take time. Be patient and just go on eating healthy foods.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Raw vegan for life. Vegan for the animals. Raw for my health.
My advice is to stop following 90/5/5 or any other PROGRAM. Instead, listen to your body needs and follow your natural instincts. Prolonged ignoring of the nutritional needs of your body could end up in a big trouble. My friend ended up in hospital emergency after she collapsed one day, diagnosed with serious deficiencies after "following" something akin to 90/5/5 for a couple of years.
Your desires for salty foods could be a manifestation of your unmet needs for minerals. A large salad (a head of lettuce or mixed soft leafy greens, cucumber, tomato, avocado, squeezed oranges as a dressing) would help.
Do what feel comfortable. Eat what tastes yummy. Be your own guru.
fresh, here are some details:
<<Heather Blyth (story inside this thread) – 2.5 years on 30BAD diet, severe teeth problems (yellowing, erosion, brown marks), extreme fatigue, moodiness, extreme weight loss (down to 40kg), taken to hospital (spent 4 months there), diagnosed with sodium deficiency, B12 deficiency, depressions, spent next 10 months being looked after by her family (and was unable to look after her son)>>
I hope there are some other delightful fruit you can enjoy now. Here, it is winter and so the selection of fruit is not as wide as in warmer seasons. Luckily, there are some yummy fruit around still.
I see there are quite a few documented on your blog. I do recall examining many of those in the past and finding quite a variety of mistakes contributing to the problems.
30bad is a poor prescription. But I think we need to be careful with throwing around general terms and thinking they are the same. 30bad, 801010, 955, raw vegan, hclf, etc are all used interchangeably and should not be.
30bad is a prescription and by definition runs counter to our "instincts" and promotes overeating, low green intake, etc.
So heather, for example likely failed for many of those reasons.
It is also important to realize that b12 creates a domino effect, and it is invalid to blame a diet with causing other problems such as low protein or sodium, or whatever, when b12 can Cause problems in all other areas, where those problems may not have occurred if b12 had been taken care of.
One cannot take "heather failed" and "was doing 955" and conclude anything about 955 in a negative manner as it can be done in many ways as far as attention to proper hunger, quality foods, etc.
Definitely agree that it is better to attune to body instead of following a "program"
That list is only a tip of an iceberg. Utlimately, it wasn't Heather who failed. It was the diet that did. And those, with no basic uncerstanding of nutrition or ethics, without appropriate backgound and familiarity with the code of conduct, who act as health educators as if they were ones. Giving poor and erroneous advice to the naive. Because they can.
As far as 955, such system does not even exist. It is a term that people started using after noticing that some go to extreme in their applicaition of the INEQUALITITES in the concept of 811 (which was actually revised by WWF, and I have seen solid scientific studies recently that suggest not 10 but closer to 20 as the healthy maximum for the fat intake). There is no basis for it, and plenty of empirical data to suggest that it is not safe.
I like raw foods and love fruit. At the same time, I like to see high standards applied. There is never enoough of these.
"the diet", if you say she was doing approx. 955, can potentially succeed or fail depending on how it is applied. there is no clear data saying that it cannot, and the point is more that WHO told her to do 955 and why would she presume it to be healthy? it may have been the low fat/protein that caused her failure, or it could have been b12 or any number of other things such as inattention to hunger, overeating, etc.
it is high risk, high reward, imo. (HCLF, not specifically 955 - I am not making any particular claims about 955)
I don't think we agree on this point. that's fine.
we may as well say the mcdougall system does not exist.
it exists as far as people are practicing it as a modification of 811 as far as macronutrients.
I don't know what you mean by inequalities in 811.
I have no qualms about fat maximums close to 20. that is not relevant to what we are discussing here, I don't think.
I just posted a reference with respect to primate needs for fats and protein and they indicated 10% each, and as low as 5% for fats.
Well, how you would apply those standards in the soft science of nutrition?
fresh, I suggest to that you visit Code of Conduct for Health Practitioners, to learn about such standards. In relation to references, I highly recommend a thorough search on Scopus (world standard for scientific references).
thanks for the reference, Gosia, but I was referring to what standards you would expect to apply to persons on youtube and discussion groups and how you would apply them. obviously you cannot - it's a free for all. I don't put the onus on the dispenser of advice - I put it on the receiver.
with respect to scopus, if you have a reference(s) that conclusively deems that X% fat/protein is too low, then provide it. Otherwise you have made claims about the CAUSES of people's health failures that are unsupported, and attributed failures to dietary regimens without any regard to how the diet was applied.
I don't have any absolute claims about failures, only have conjectures from patterns that I have seen, and unwillingness to attribute failure to b12 and unwillingness to attribute failure to inattention to hunger cues, quality, high density foods, and other issues.
I'm certain there are wild variations with respect to macro recommendations, and as I said, I just recently posted a reference with respect to real world fat intake of primates and also human recommendations (around 10% sufficient).
fresh, your question was, <<Well, how you would apply those standards in the soft science of nutrition?>> and I have answered that. As far as online forums, people may have their personal opinions and have a discussion (and clearly, can follow forum guideliness in relation to the etiquette). One needs to understand the difference between having a chat and giving health advice. Those who present themselves as heath coaches etc, hosting any online programs etc, are subject to certain laws. It's a good idea to be familar with it.
As far as references, if all you have is one reference (what is it? please give details here), a standard thing to do is to perform a thorough search (as research evolves). So do visit Scopus (or Web of Science). Start with the reference you have, search for anyone who quotes it, search for any references within it etc. This should give you many interesting leads. If you do find that 5% of fat in the human diet is what the scientists recommend indeed, I would be very interested to hear that.
