lowering uric acid with cherries on a fruitarian diet

Fruits contain fructose, which in turn, metabolize on uric acid. High uric acid is linked to bone fractures (like hip) or gout (arthritis joint pain). It could also affect bone health by lowering the blood ph and leaching Ca through the PTH hormone path (PTH regulates acidity on the blood).

Most people won't have problems with high uric acid levels. But just in case, to lower uric acid, eat tart cherries, blueberries, or pomegranate (which contain anthocyanins).

I hate the seeds in pomegranate, I always spit them out. And blueberries make my smoothies gelatin...but I love them by the CASE.
Tart cherries, where do I get those.

Uric acid is what eating meat creates I thought too.

believe or not, vegans have slighly higher levels of uric acid than meat eaters (acording with only one study done so far). Don't know the diets of the vegans of the study. It is believed that maybe the fruit in fructose is what causes it. Another theory is that low b12 causes it. This vegan level is still in the healthy normal range (but the lowest the better). But for some reason, some people are more sensitive than others and may develop problems. Here is an article about eating 10 cherries a day.

Simpler solution. Do not eat fruits ???

not really. Fruits contain many advantages as compared to the possible uric acid disadvantage. And some fruits (like the ones listed on the first post) lower uric acid levels. Another thig is that maybe calcium lowers uric levels too. So, emphasizing brocolly or dark leafy greens should help too. Also, ripenned fruit contains more glucose than fructose. Having a lean body mass index helps too (and exercise). Many factors play a role.

The levels were not even high, so what is the concern?

I am surprised that the meat eaters was not higher, but maybe the dairy reducing it.

Plus as noted, these are not raw vegans.

I think fasting produces high uric acid levels too. And you got Mercola promoting fasting (to compensate for his fat diet) but complaining about fructose giving urinc acid.

Yes I have observed fruits are ok as long as I have enough greens and green juices in my diet.

Fruitarian diets carry an additional risk of dental carries, osteoporsis, and anemia. Better just well planned vegan than fruitarian. O

there are different styles of fruitarian diets. Some include greens, seeds, and nuts.

The vegans in this study were consuming soy products, which are high in purines. I just glanced through the article, I don't recall if it gave amounts. Perhaps this problem came from vegans trying to make their diet have the amount of protein as people who consume animal products?

Everyone I have personally met that had a gout problem seems to be people who eat animal products. I don't know enough vegans to know if they ever had a gout problem. The only unhealthy vegans, or vegetarians I have met had diets which were almost exclusively grain, soy and beans. "For the protein" they also took vitamin supplements to 'make up' for their lack of fruit and vegetables. If these study was on a bias of vegans of this type I wouldn't be too surprised.

I know vegans that are unhealthy (eat junk). Yet, there are some that are the opposite (eat fresh whole foods and exercise). The later is less convenient with more work to collect and prepare the stuff. But eventually, it becomes a habit.

panchito

where exactly in this article does it point to fruit causing higher levels of uric acid

i don't see it

they mentioned "vegan" and "vegetarianism" but not just "fruit" eating

also what is the mechanism whereby fruit causes higher uric acid levels

you have to google for fructose uric acid. For example:

Quote

The findings indicate that elevated uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) are associated with more severe hepatic ATP depletion in response to fructose intake.

panchito,

la_v asked about fruit.

it's not the same as a study of fructose.

fruit contains an excellent balance of fructose, glucose, etc, and is not associated with uric acid problems, even though there are foolish recommendations to avoid bananas on the internet while you have gout, because they are allegedly high in purines .

like "meat is high in protein", and high protein causes kidney problems, therefore tigers should avoid eating meat ....

you seem to think I am against fruit. I am not. Since I don't know much, I am only pointing to a possibility on some people to have high levels. There are many factors like genes too. If you have high tryglicerides then you may have high uric acid levels. You can get a multipurpose uric acid or triglycerides meter on Amazon.

High dietary intake of fructose contributes significantly to hyperuricemia.[12][13][14] In a large study in the United States, consumption of four or more sugar-sweetened soft drinks per day gave an odds ratio of 1.82 for hyperuricemia.[15] Increased production of uric acid is the result of interference, by a product of fructose metabolism, in purine metabolism. This interference has a dual action, both increasing the conversion of ATP to inosine and hence uric acid and increasing the synthesis of purine.[16] Fructose also inhibits the excretion of uric acid, apparently by competing with uric acid for access to the transport protein SLC2A9.[17] The effect of fructose in reducing excretion of uric acid is increased in people with a hereditary (genetic) predisposition toward hyperuricemia and/or gout.[16]

PS: ketogenic diets are really bad for uric acid. Thats why Dr Mercola is a hypocrite.

not really, just seems that fructose and fruit are being conflated.

Panchito,
That study was concernging High fructose corn syrup. Who is surprised to learn that its bad stuff? Anything that divorced from nature is going to cause problems.

mercola is funny...recommends intermittent fasting for weight loss and health instead of eating right.
