Do you do formal exercise?
Posted by: banana who ()

I cycle and I walk. I don't jog. I don't go to a gym. I am wondering about gentle yet effective exercises I can do. Yes, Hatha yoga will be one of them. But I am looking for good toning activities that are not too strenuous and will help me ease into more intensity. Thanks. smiling smiley

You may want to try isometric exercise.
You can exercise anywhere with them

You are your own gym.

Thanks, RP! I couldn't see any equipment needed. Is there anything we must have? Is this what those bands are all about? I think I have a couple somewhere.

I really appreciate that link! I am looking for things I can do at home and in the park. I don't like gyms.

Another set of exercises that require no equipment are the five tibetans, they are very old, ancient but very effective, and many books have been written on them

Yes. I have an exercise bike (being I failed to ever learn to ride a real one) I'm on 10-45 minutes a day, I do sit ups, squats and go for daily walks on the trails around where I live. I am generally active. I don't care to have an outrageously "sculpted" body or anything, just generally want to be fit and active. I did buy a home yoga DVD a few months ago, just haven't yet watched it. I can't afford formal yoga classes, so a DVD type "class" is about the best I'll be able to do.

I'm working on this! I enjoy going for long walks almost every day, but am also trying to drop in on more yoga classes and cardio/strength classes at the YMCA here. I guess I've yet to find something that I really like, but one of the staff told me that the more you exercise, the more you'll crave it, so in time I 'spose.

Iyengar Yoga, walking/running 4 miles, pumping handweights during 30-40 minutes aerobic routine or walking the dog.

I try to do at least 2 of the above everyday. Requires minimal equipment. Just appropriate clothing and a cheap set of handweights from Target or Walmart. And a dog.

No dog but I have some handweights. How heavy are yours? I think mine are 5 lbs. I think to be more functional, I would rather haul groceries in tote bags from a produce market that is an hour walk each way from me. More holistic/organic exercise, you know? smiling smiley

Well, yes, as long as you are pumping your tote bags. smiling smiley

5 pounds are probably about right. Depends on if you can sustain them for however long you want to work out. You may want to go higher or lower. I used 5 pounds previously until an injury set me back to 4 pounds (at least for a while).
