Someone posted a distiller on here with a plastic casing but inside is stainless steel. I am leaning towards that type. You can get a decent one for $200. I also am thinking possibly of a Berkey, which is stainless steel throughout and I believe it serves as a holding tank for the water, as well.

I live in the Midwest and have hard water. For that you need a distiller that won't get a build up of minerals if you don't want to do descaling and scrubbing. This is the one I have which is built to not have any mineral build up. Rinse it out and that's it for clean up ....

For off grid the purifier I have has better specs and was a bit cheaper than the Berkey.

SueZ, that is not cheaper than a Berkey. I have seen models for less than $300 with the fluroride filters and maybe I missed it but is the bottom one you posted good for getting rid of fluoride?

Berkey has had a lot of problems with their black filters. I wouldn't trust those but do your homework as I bought my filters years ago and things change.

I'm not surprised that the Aquarain's are a bit more expensive now a days as they are made in the US. Even so their filters may still cost less to replace than Berkey's filters so it's six of one half dozen of the other so far as the real costs goes.I don't know about fluoride as it was never a concern for me for off grid and with well water at home.

Here are plans for a DIY model which should be ok for backup and for those who are on a very tight budget. You can put whatever and however many filters you want in it ...
