Burning tongue after eating kiwifruit
Posted by: Ela2013 ()

I just had 6 kiwifruits that I let ripen and I got itchy almost burning tongue and lips, and I felt like my tongue and lower lip were kind of slightly swollen. I drank some water and my tongue hurt while drinking, but then I felt a bit better, though my tongue is still sensitive. I knew about pineapple causing these reactions, but I never had such issues after eating kiwifruits. I think I'll stay away from them.
What do you know about this?

Yes, I thought about this, but they were ripe, just like the other 3 I had recently, when I had absolutely no problem.

I read it can be an allergy, or that enzyme which is also in pineapple.

I read on a forum that lots of people had these issues with kiwifruit, even when ripe.

I noticed that the part making me feel like having a burning tongue was the white core inside the kiwifruit. In a similar way, the core of pineapple is said to cause the same reaction.

Yesterday it took me a while to feel a bit better, but the lemon juice in the evening salad made my tongue burn again. Today I feel better, I could eat my mandarins with no problem, I was afraid they would make my tongue burn again too. I'll definitely not eat kiwifruits anymore.

I get this sometimes with pineapple (makes my chin red almost like hives) and I did get something with kiwi that was not quite ripe.

If your throat closed in, then obviously it would be dangerous. I think strawberries do that for some people. I have also gotten my tongue feeling sore or burning after pineapple but it's not a serious situation. It doesn't hurt too much or last too long.

Thank you, SueZ, I searched this and here is a good link:

[fawesome.ifood.tv]

In this article it mentions that allergy to kiwifruit is also related to allergy to strawberries, avocado, pineapple, mango, banana.

Strangely but not surprisingly, I absolutely don't like avocado, pineapple, mango.

And I used to have strawberry allergy in the past, I would get red bumps on my body.

You're welcome, Ela.

Sometimes people don't like foods they are allergic to but sometimes they crave them. It's very possible you became sensitized to bananas by eating so many of them and that contributed to your gall bladder attacks by causing swelling there. Take care.

SueZ, you make a great point here. I didn't even think that by eating so many bananas I developed a sensivity to them and hence the gall bladder attack, thank you for pointing that out, it's something I'll definitely consider.

I don't even like bananas anymore, at least for the time being, I have no more cravings for them, even if here there are like a ton of ripe bananas everywhere now, for good prices. It's like they don't taste good to me anymore. I'm looking forward to summer fruits smiling smiley

Sorry, I first posted here by mistake my daily food menu, so I erased it.

But since I'm here on this topic, I can say that I haven't been eating kiwifruits ever since that bad experience, and I don't feel the need for them, I don't even crave them. Actually I'm kind of afraid to try them again, for fear that I would get burning tongue again. So I'll just leave it at that...
