I recently bought a conventional honeydew melon and even though I peeled it, the edge of the peeled melon tasted strange, with almost a hint of mold flavor. I figure it had been sitting in something strange on the ground and had been washed off, so nothing could be seen on it, but somehow it had penetrated the melon. It was grown in California, probably from there.
That reminds that I talked to a PhD student at Standford who studies heavy metals in soil and she said that garden plants can uptake lead that was dropped into the soil from the lead paint from homes. Re: Cali Central Valley Crops Being Watered With Effing Fracking Water!!!

Speaking of heavy metals - about the only place it's legal to store mercury is in our teeth. Thank goodness for small miracles. Up until 1989, as I recall, almost all faucets were legally manufactured with lead components that came in direct contact with the water as it flowed out of the tap. so much of the produce at whole foods comes from california, especially the conventional produce. i wonder if they're looking into this matter at all. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
