Has anyone heard of this or more information? Low protein diet and B12?

I just stumbled across this article: [www.veganhealth.org] which is fairly run of the mill except the part about the Iranian villagers which I have never heard before:

Quote
Iranian Villagers

Halstead et al. (8) reported that some Iranian villagers with very little animal product intake (dairy once a week, meat once a month) had normal B12 levels. None had megaloblastic anemia. Their average B12 level was 411 pg/ml which was quite high considering their diet. The authors speculated this could be because their diets, which were very low in protein, allowed for B12-producing bacteria to ascend into the ileum where the B12 could be absorbed. They also speculated that because they lived among their farm animals and their living areas were littered with feces, they picked up enough B12 through contamination.

Wondering if anyone has more information or insight into this? More specifically, about what they are saying about low protein diet allowing the bacteria to move into the part of the gut where it can be absorbed. I have been looking into natural sources of B12 and heard (unsubstantiated) from a few people that humans can produce their own useable B12, though the best I've found on that is that it's via eating their own feceseye popping smiley.

It is interesting isn't it? I remember reading here ages ago (perhaps it was suncloud who wrote it? I can't remember) about somebody who grew a lot of her own food and ate it unwashed, but still had problems with low B12. I'm currently supplementing as my levels are pretty low. I'd love to find a way to do it naturally (although I'm not prepared to start eating my @#$%&, lol).

Great article Gosia, thanks for sharing. Do you still supplement with B12?
