Digestive issues transitioning raw?
Posted by: LavenderBunnie ()
Date: August 18, 2015 08:08PM

I've been having issues gradually transitioning to raw vegan from a whole foods omni diet. My main issues are digestive problems - heartburn, indigestion, diarrhea, & stomach pain. (I have been paying attention to food combining)... I'm eating 90% vegan now, and about 60% raw throughout the day - only cooked foods at night...

I'm not sure how to prevent this because I'm having problems even after a fruit mono meal... Today I had apples for breakfast, heartburn, mangoes for lunch, more heartburn. And when I eat cooked vegan food in the evening I get indigestion. I was trying to transition gradually to avoid bad detox symptoms...

So what am I doing wrong?

It may not be your situation but in may similar cases, the problem is not with the food you are eating now but with the foods you ate before going raw, even years before.
The raw food especially the high fruit diet will start a cleansing process.
The hardened matters in the digestive system have to be removed and it may not be an easy experience.
Most people who succeed on the raw food diet starts with a cleansing programs to get themselves ready for high raw.

Lol is it too late to do that now? What cleansing programs are recommended?

It may be your fruit choices are not quite right for you, or perhaps your fruits is not ripe. Try other nicely ripeend fruit. Bananas are ripe when there are freckles on the banana, a yellow banana is not ripe.

Also, apples are hard to eat in any quantity. Perhaps try some ripe melon or grapes.

Also try to get organic if you can.

For cleansing, you may need to contact John Rose, he can guide you, he does not post any more but you can send him a private message.

Also you may try getting into fermenting and check the sproutarian posts.

I would make sure to eat fruits ripe and organic...If the fruits are not ripe - they will not digest well. I used to be 100% fruitarian, so trust me on this one...I will fast and not eat anything than eating unripe fruits....If you cant get good local fruits, it is a common issue which is why I had to switch to more veggies and nuts.

Also, eating raw means tons of fiber which are body does NOT digest, our gut bacteria does. To help your transition, you can use enzymes. Personally, I started to use digestive enzymes when I had candida and continued to use them even after I healed. I swear by them, this is the brand I use which is vegan and the best I tried

Sounds like your not producing enough stomach acid to digest your food properly. This is a very common problem once people hit middle age. Some of the best digestive enzymes come from unripe fruit such as the core of unripe pineapples and raw green papaya - but shhh don't tell the unripe fruit haters that -this is just between you and me.

I don't think that's my issue. I'm only 22 years old! It may have been the apples. They were pretty sweet and organic, so idk why they weren't digesting well.. My bananas are always somewhat brown when I eat them. And I've been trying to make my cooked meals a little simpler. I didn't have heartburn yesterday.. Still experiencing a little dizziness and fatigue since beginning. I had a lot of greens Tuesday night and veggie sushi with no problem.. Also had bananas & dates for breakfast. And some super sweet oranges for lunch after that. I was afraid of the citrus causing heartburn, but it didn't! And I actually had a small amount of beans last night in my cooked meal. So far so good.

So what about this fatigue? I don't feel weak in my body like I'm undernourished. My body feels really good. It's more of a sleepiness throughout the day.. I'm wondering if maybe it's from cutting out coffee a few weeks ago.. Sleep debt? And I get a dizzy feeling, too. But it's not dizzy like everything goes dark and I feel like I might faint, it's more of a brain fog dizzy feeling.

A day? I eat about 3 bananas every day. I can't really eat more than that at once because they're so filling.

Apples I eat twice a week maybe.. 3 in a meal.

I'm still having problems. No pain or heartburn, but I'm still dizzy with fatigue, even right after eating. And I'm still having diarrhea.. I'm trying to drink more, although my pee has been clear for weeks...

Any other advice or help?

I'm so confused.. She said it was a common problem for middle-aged people. I'm 22!

I cut out the apples, no more heartburn.. But I'm having diarrhea & dizzy as heck

It's not a bad idea to keep close tabs on you blood sugar when you're eating a lot of fruit - especially since you are dizzy after you eat. I wish I had done that sooner myself. Oh well. Good luck.

How do I check my blood sugar myself? And what would I do to alleviate blood sugar issues?

Here's the kit I use. The strips are much cheaper on Amazon than they are at Walgreens.

Test yourself first thing in the morning before you have anything to eat or drink. Test yourself before meals and then, (at first while you're learning), test again right after meals, 1 hour after meals, two hours after meals and at bed time.

If you do this for a week and write your findings and what you had to eat in the kit's diary you will get a pretty good idea of what's going on. Ideally you don't want a meal to raise your blood sugar more than 30mg/dL (in the USA) and want it back down to to pre-meal levels 2 hours after you eat.

Once you get good enough at drawing a big enough drop of blood for the test you can switch to finer gauge lancets without having to worry about wasting strips due to errors of not giving the machine a big enough drop to test.

Please get back to us after you've done this. Thanks, and good luck.

Wth. I do not want to throw $30 on that. Especially considering I have no idea if my issue is even blood sugar related!! I have never had blood sugar problems in the past. I'm young & healthy (or as healthy as you can be on an omni diet, i guess) If it might be blood sugar, I'd rather skip the testing, and try the solution.

So what is the solution to having elevated blood sugar after fruit meals? If the solution helps, then I could conclude that it is likely to be blood sugar related and then go from there..

Excuse me? I don't understand why you're not answering my further questions? I'm trying to figure out how to transition to this raw food diet without having these issues.. If a dietary adjustment would help, I would gladly try it. However, I don't feel comfortable spending $30 (that I could be using on bills and food!) on a blood sugar test kit that I don't even know if I need!! I'm asking here because there is very little information out there about issues on a raw food diet. Why be a d*ck? Unless you're insinuating that I don't *need* to switch to a raw food diet if I feel okay on an omni diet? Um, hello, regardless of whether I feel sick or not on an omnivore diet, I want to be healthier and do less harm. So what do you have a problem with?

What do you think about experiencing dizziness right after eating a big fruit meal?

Tai:
Could be insulin resistance.

You are asking about transitioning to raw and also to vegan. You might have tissue problems with your sphincter, stomach (perhaps GERD), etc that the fruit is exposing. Eating a high protein diet in the past could be the cause of tissue problems. Doing a three day cleanse on the weekend when you are not in school or working might help. A good cleanse is more of a liquid diet, like juices (up to 4 quarts daily), along with very juicy fruit, like melons. Unless you juice apples, the skin is pretty coarse. I highly recommend fresh raw aloe smoothies to heal the esophagus and stomach (blend no more than 10 seconds, only use gel, no skin).

The cleanse can help move out unwanted waste and give your tissues a chance to heal, and they can be stronger to handle raw food, which can often be coarse with a lot of fiber.

Actually people often detox and cleanse regularly over the years, but three days is a good start, if you are in school.

Also, I am speaking as an acupuncturist...the five emotions rule the five major groups of organs in TCM. Stress and worry affect digestion. Don't eat when you are stressed out. Calm down first. Anger, hatred, rage, jealousy, etc, affect the liver. When the liver and gallbladder (wood element) is too stressed it affects the digestion. Hence rage, anger, etc can impact digestion. Best to eat when calm and collected. Best to let go of negativity.

A great teacher on this is Lou Corona, who has been raw vegan for 40 years and went through a horrible sickness when he was 21. Watch him tell his story on youtube.

Thank you for the great info! I'm saving it. Do you think 3 days of a cleanse is really long enough to help with these issues? I am a stay at home mom of 2 toddlers, so on one hand, I don't have to worry about work or school.. But on the other, I can't say that it's possible for me to truly rest all day during a cleanse. I can however do less housework and just focus on taking care of my kids to get a little more rest while I cleanse..

I've heard of the emotions affecting digestion, and being a mother, I've noticed that on stressful days my digestion isn't as great. But my stress levels have gone WAY down since starting a high raw diet, which is one reason I want to continue even if it means dealing with some digestive problems. I do follow life regenerative on YouTube (what is the consensus on his teachings about raw food? Is he a good person to learn from?), and I have heard him mention not eating unless you feel calm without any emotional issues. I will definitely try to stick to that!

Lavender Bunnie:

Tai:
He is good to learn from when he interviews Lou Corona. Watch all the videos of him with Lou Corona. The main problem with Dan is the length of the videos. THey are way too long and take too much time.

Robert Morse ND (Dan the man's teacher) is very controversial in the long run, but in the short run, his info can really assist in a good detox. He has a series of videos on detoxification (look for his titled series on detoxification. OTherwise his videos on other topics are also too long winded). Basically, Robert teaches how to eat the astringent fruits for an effective detox (for example, lemons and dark seeded grapes). The reason why he is controversial in the long run is because many have issues with a high fruit diet long term. Many on this board have lived on a high fruit diet for decades and do well, while others complain about the sugar levels. So no two people are alike in their needs. Lou Corona, has been raw for 40 years and he teaches to minimize fruit intake. However, he eats a lot more fruit than Brian clement.

In any case, your reaction to apples might have been the peel and weak digestion, so all I can recommend is to try very soft fruit, like very ripe melons and green juice. Again, if you have GERD or something wrong with your sphincter, the aloe smoothies can help heal the tissue.

Also, the issue with the cleanse is not resting, because it typically is not tiring for someone your age. The issue is being near a bathroom and going frequently throughout the day. It would happen if you are drinking 4 quarts of fresh raw juice, aloe smoothies and juicy fruit. And I only said three days as a doable plan. Longer is better if you really have a good juicer. IT depends on your tools. If you don't have an excellent juicer, or can't buy good juice, then maybe just 3 days to start. A good juicer extracts more minerals. There is a man on this board who has coached people on long juice fasts, but that should only be done once you are educated. You shouldn't try anything too long without a well laid out plan.

Brian Clement has really great info on veganism. HIs supplements are often over priced, though, so I am mostly recommending the information videos on food. His bias against fruit is not popular on this board and many feel opposed to his fruit stance.

Well, you will see that as a vegan, you can eat high fruit or low fruit. It will be your choice. But even BRian Clement started out in this lifestyle on high fruit.

The last recommendation that I will give you is to watch all the English videos of Patrick Baboumian, who won a world title for yoke lifting. He's like 5'7 and carried about 1100 lbs as a vegan. You will not think you need meat for strength again. (there's only a few English videos that explain what he eats)

Also watch Matthew Armstrong who gained like 30 lbs of muscle in 100 days on a vegan diet, high raw.

Good luck Lavender Bunnie

Thank you again. I will look into everything you mentioned, and plan to buy a juicer asap. I'll look at reviews from other raw vegans before purchasing one. What is the cheapest you would recommend for a beginner? I will just have to try out what percentage of fruit does best for me. I will say I haven't been getting dizzy eating smaller fruit meals and waiting until I'm hungry to actually eat. Though I definitely need to find a way to up my calories if I'm decreasing my fruit intake. Mixed salads are so low calorie.

Some people on this forum eat freshly sprouted and fermented cereals, like oat or buckwheat. I would do that if I had time. I just eat dried raw sprouted cereals. Brian Clement teaches the nutrition of sprouts and the sproutarian man has a website that goes into detail how to grow many kinds of sprouts, which are high in calories.

Lou Corona teaches how to make seed and nut yogurt which is high calorie, but also high fat.

I'll definitely learn more about sprouting. I do feel that i should stick to low fat right now since I'm trying to cleanse my body from the high fat animals products I've eaten my entire life.

What is the cheapest you would recommend for a beginner?

Tai:
The cheapest is a centrifugal juicer and the most expensive is a twin gear juicer. These are not brand names; these are kinds of juicers.

My cheapest juicer I own is a plastic single auger wheat grass juicer, worth about $45 retail. The next cheapest juicer I have is a jack lalaine, worth about $130, but the plastic models can be as low as $30, if there is a sale somewhere.
THe next juicer I have is a twin gear, called green star and it's worth about $450 and we also have an angel which costs even more than that, but it's all stainless steel and extracts more calcium than the others.

I have a nice citrus juicer worth about $30 and that is essential for me.

I recommend a centrifugal to start out with because it's the fastest to juice and clean. You can juice cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, carrots, etc, but don't try juicing any greens, or you will waste your money. Melons are great in centrifugals.

ALso, people like upgrading their juicers, so it's not uncommon for someone to just give you their old juicer. IT doesn't hurt to ask. I have given away many juicers and old kitchen machines to newbies (not in the mail, just in person).
