When I have to chop like a bag of onions at one time I use the slicer blade that came with my food processor, then dump the slices onto a big chopping block in stacks and cut them perpendicularly with a knife. At $20 if it works as well in real life as in the ads then you've done well - considering they are also offering 2 for $20. I am grating carrots on a hand grater and have to BE careful not to lose half my fingers.

I've got an old USA made gadget like this linked one I just use for root stuff like carrots. When you use the finest grater it kind of mashes the carrots as it shreds them making them very sweet and juicy like nothing else does. It makes it easy to stay wound free, too.
