It is not enough to eat good raw and living food
We need to examine what comes out
The state of our health is in what comes out
It drops into the water and not easy to examine
With the automatic flushing toilet you can't even see it
I wish I could examine my stools
I wish there was a stool collector

"The history of love, shite, and the lizard also waits to be written." --Dominique Laporte1

Introduction: Seeking the German Toilet and Finding the French

Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek begins his book, The Plague of Fantasies, with a comparison of three cultures -- French, German, and Anglo-American -- in terms of their toilets. In the German toilet the hole is in the front with a platform in the back, "so that the shite is first laid out for us to sniff at and inspect for traces of some illness."2 The hole and the platform of the French toilet are reversed, in order for the shite to "disappear as soon as possible." In between these two cultural metaphors -- those of the German need to confront one's own waste and the French unwillingness to acknowledge its presence -- stands the Anglo-American toilet: "the basin is full of water, so that the shite floats in it -- visible, but not to be inspected." For more than a century American culture has been vacillating back and forth within this dichotomy, never so neatly as to be decidedly on either side ["French" or "German"], but it has always been interested in shite...at a safe distance.

Waho!! The shape of the toilet is an indication of the culture.
The Germans have it right. We need to confront our own waste.
I have gotten into the habit of inspecting it lately and it is very revealing.
Keeping tract what I eat, how it is processed, and how it is disposed off.
