City of Colleyville says it will not enforce Tarrant County’s mask mandate

Colleyville won’t enforce Tarrant County’s mask requirements as coronavirus cases soar

The city of Colleyville won’t enforce Tarrant County’s order requiring people to wear masks inside businesses and at large outdoor gatherings, according to a statement released Thursday.

Coronavirus cases in the county are soaring, with 517 new cases reported Thursday — the most any North Texas county has reported on a single day. Tarrant County has had a total of 10,363 positive cases.

Colleyville’s statement said it “will not adopt any formal action enacting this measure nor provide enforcement” and directed questions to the county. The city had not yet returned a request for comment.

”I’m disappointed that the leadership took the position that they’ve taken,” Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley told The Dallas Morning News on Friday. “We’re talking about a little inconvenience.”

The mask requirement applies to businesses and gatherings of 100 people or more. It goes into effect Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m. and will stay in place until Aug. 3 at 6 a.m., unless it is extended. Businesses who don’t comply could face charges up to $1,000.

Whitley said any licensed peace officer can write a citation for someone who is not following the mask ordinance, including people in Colleyville.

But he said the intent of the order isn’t to write an extensive number of citations.

“We’ve said to all of our police departments, ‘Don’t go out there and just start writing citations,‘” Whitley said. “That’s never been our intent.”

He said that the main reason for the ordinances is to combat “belligerent” residents who refuse to wear masks when asked.

The judge said Colleyville residents have said they will uphold the policy despite the city’s lack of enforcement.

“We’ve had many folks call our offices, both business and citizens, who’ve said they’re sorry, they’re disappointed,” Whitley said. “The businesses have said they’re still planning on posting this health and safety policy. They’re going to require their customers to wear masks.”

Colleyville’s move comes after Gov. Greg Abbott encouraged Texans to wear face masks as cases of the coronavirus spike. He hasn’t issued a statewide mandate, but last week, he allowed cities and counties to enact the policy.

Gov. Greg Abbott takes off his mask before speaking at a new conference with local officials concerning protest violence, on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at City Hall in Dallas. Protests have continued across the nation in response to police brutality sparked by the May 25 death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pleads with Texans to wear masks, but leaves decisions to local leaders

It’s resulted in a patchwork of regulations, with Tarrant County joining Dallas County and others with mask requirements, but Denton and Collin counties forgoing them for now.

In the statement, Colleyville officials said they “appreciate and follow the leadership of Gov. Abbott.”

As of June 24, Colleyville had a total of 49 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and zero deaths, according to the Tarrant County website.

Masks are not required but will be available during the city’s Stars & Guitars Fourth of July celebration Friday, officials said, adding that 40 acres of open parkland, 700 parking spaces and multiple viewing areas will make social distancing feasible.

Yeah, I went to my two local supermarkets today. I think more people are going without masks. In the big supermarket, six people didn't have masks and in the small one four people didn't have them. It was 93 degrees today. Virginia 'took the plunge' today into Phase 3 so restaurants can have full capacity but still have to be six feet apart, and gatherings can be 250. Whoop de doo!

And Gov. Blackface Northam said he'll go back to Phase 2 or even Phase 1 if he has to angry smiley

Virginia is taking the plunge into phase 3 on Wednesday, July 1, nearly a month after entering phase 2.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, a medical doctor, said last week he is worried about a possible surge as well in Virginia, and says he’s also willing to go back to phase 2 or even phase 1 if necessary. He still encourages Virginians to stay home when possible and still telework if possible — and don’t forget about the face coverings.

More nonsense at the library today. We still can't go inside. The library lady said they're being extra cautious about opening because of the social distancing. And we have a very big library, tons of room compared to the number of people who frequent it.

I noticed the bookdrop outside the library has a sign on it that says, "Your books are in quarantine for 3 days." What? Can you imagine if a year ago someone had told you that the day would come that when you returned your library books, the books would go into quarantine for three days because of your germs on them, so nobody would get sick from them! You would have never believed such stupidity. Yet the Useful Idiots think this is regular life, nothing unusual, 'nothing to see here', nothing fishy going on ... eye rolling smiley

You're right. Eloquent.

Gov. Blackface Northam is a pompous a*s.

That plexiglass is annoying when the cashier people have reach around to hand you the receipt. We went to the car people to pick up my car that had broken down at the dentist the day before. sad smiley It was a small room, there were two people behind the counter and three mechanics. Crowded. Not a single person had on a mask. So yeah, car mechanics don't wear masks.
