Everything Mencken says below applies today and ties into what Plato says at the end of this post showing that nothing ever changes because the Masses do NOT have a mind of their own.

“The men the American public admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth.” -H. L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)

“Any man who afflicts the human race with ideas must be prepared to see them misunderstood.” -H. L. Mencken

“There is no record in history of a happy philosopher.” -H. L. Mencken

"The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, and intolerable." -H. L. Mencken

“Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.” -H. L. Mencken

“I believe that all government is evil, and that trying to improve it is largely a waste of time.” -H. L. Mencken

“All government, in its essence, is a conspiracy against the superior man: its one permanent object is to oppress him and cripple him.” -H. L. Mencken

“Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right.” -H. L. Mencken

“The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it.” -H. L. Mencken

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.” -H. L. Mencken

“Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.” -H. L. Mencken

Mencken's "led to safety" reminds me of Plato's "This and no other is the root from which a tyrant springs; when he first appears he is a protector.”

Is it possible for the Masses to ever Wake Up and realize these simple words from Plato? “Those who tell the stories rule society.”
