1 gram Synthetic Vitamin C bad for mitochondria

The administration of vitamin C significantly hampered endurance capacity. The adverse effects of vitamin C may result from its capacity to reduce the exercise-induced expression of key transcription factors involved in mitochondrial biogenesis. Vitamin C also prevented the exercise-induced expression of cytochrome C and of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase.

The results of the present study show that supplementation with vitamin C does not improve but partially decreases the improvement in VO2max associated with exercise training in rats and in humans. Moreover, it very significantly hampers endurance capacity in animals, as a result of the decrease in mitochondriogenesis that is normally associated with exercise training.

When supplementing with vitamin C, there is the possibility that it may act as a prooxidant in vivo. These prooxidative reactions of vitamin C readily occur in vitro, and it has been shown that they also may have relevance in vivo (30).

The second major conclusion that can be drawn from our experiments is that supplementation with vitamin C lowers training efficiency. This information is helpful for nutritionists who must prepare diets for athletes whose performance is dependent on their endurance capacity.

Several reports have shown deleterious effects of antioxidant treatment. It was shown that supplementation of racing greyhounds with 1 g vitamin C/d for 4 wk significantly slowed their speed (39).

Thus, the common practice of taking vitamin C supplements during training (for both health-related and performance-related physical fitness) should be seriously questioned.

Yes, thanks, Panchito!

Amazing that most people think Ascorbic Acid is natural Vitamin C. Vitamin C powder is about the only supplement I take sometimes.

I use this one -

It is okay, I think, to use large doses of vitamin C, synthetic or otherwise, as medicine, in certain situations.

But it should not be used daily in large amounts, that is for sure. I read an article by a M.D. who took too much for too long and he had serious problems. Best to eat some raw fruits and vegetables. There may be much less Vit. C in these items, but somehow they seem to work better. As you all know. smiling smiley

If you eat an orange you get many more benefits than eating 4 grams a day of ascorbic powder from China. And you won't suffer experimental damage.

Flavonoids show a strong antioxidant and radical scavenging activity [6] and appear to be associated with reduced risk for certain chronic diseases [7], the prevention of some cardiovascular disorders [8] and certain kinds of cancerous processes [9]. Flavonoids exhibit also antiviral [10], antimicrobial [11], and anti-inflammatory activities [12], beneficial effects on capillary fragility [13] and an ability to inhibit human platelet aggregation [14], antiulcer [15] and antiallergenic [16] properties. However, the actual in vivo mechanism of action is largely unknown.
