High Fat Diet destroys central nervous system

HFD = high fat diet

Overall, our findings show that HFD-related changes in metabolic regulators, decreased mitochondrial function, and oxidative stress contribute to a loss of myelinating cells. These studies identify HFD consumption as a key modifiable lifestyle factor for improved myelin integrity in the adult central nervous system and in addition new tractable metabolic targets for myelin protection and repair strategies.

Diet-induced obesity increases the risk for a number of diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and cognitive dysfunction and has been steadily growing in prevalence in recent decades [20,56–59]. The role of oligodendrocytes and myelin plasticity is likewise implicated in a variety of neuropsychiatric and cognitive conditions [1,2,6]. Notably, white matter integrity is negatively correlated with BMI and is decreased in the corpus callosum of obese individuals [4,14,60].

overconsumption of saturated fats is detrimental for overall brain function [19,20]. HFD consumption exacerbates both autoreactive immune responses and neuroinflammation in experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE) [21,22]. Metabolic derangement resulting from obesogenic diets or excessive saturated fatty acids can lead to oxidative and ER stress responses and ultimate death of vulnerable cell types [23–25].

Chronic high fat diet consumption impairs metabolic parameters and diminishes the number of oligodendrocytes and progenitors in the central nervous system.

these findings suggest that oligodendrocyte progenitors in both the brain and spinal cord are vulnerable to death in response to chronic HFD consumption; however, only spinal cord mature oligodendrocytes appeared susceptible to HFD-induced toxicity at the timepoint examined.

HFD consumption was previously shown to alter the metabolic regulators AMPK and SIRT1 in peripheral tissues and to affect mitochondrial function and quality control processes [49,50].

The results of the current study suggest that consumption of excess high fat alone is sufficient to trigger oligodendrogliopathy and impairments in oligodendrocyte differentiation across the brain and spinal cord and links these to several disturbances in metabolic status. Oligodendrocytes play critical roles in modulating motor [63,64] and psychiatric [5,65] function by improving the speed and integrity of impulse conduction, providing neuronal metabolic support, and regulating synapses [8].

Mitochondrial morphology and impaired mitochondrial function and antioxidant responses are also reported in experimental models of demyelinating disease [87–89].

The findings of the current study demonstrate significant perturbations in CNS function occur in response to long term consumption of a diet laden with excessive fat, including direct impairment of oligodendrocyte mitochondrial function that ultimately impairs oligodendrocyte survival and differentiation.

The folks who consume a high saturated fat diet, in the context of a low- or no-carb diet will say otherwise. And they do say so, forcefully.

#II. [draxe.com]

Dr. Axe acknowledges that not all low-carb are necessarily high fat - though some healthy regimens are.

#III. [www.doctorkiltz.com]

The opposite viewpoint (sort-of; read the whole article):

Excerpt: It’s entirely possible to lose body fat while eating a high-carb/low-fat diet. As long as you’re burning more calories than you’re consuming, you’re going to lose weight.

What a crock of schit. My goodness, I thought the calorie theory applied to human weight had been killed off ages ago.

Your article (I went to the original) states:

The findings of the current study suggest that consumption of high fat alone is sufficient to trigger demyelinating effects in the brain and spinal cord of adult mice.

So, I guess this is about mice.

I have no dog in this fight. We are all constituted a little different.

It's true though, you can lose weight on any diet/macro-nutrient ratio pending that you burn more calories than you are expending.

This is why most of these fad diets like low carb etc are not magical in mechanism, its just simply a case of caloric reduction.

Excessive high fat diets appear to have numerous deleterious effects on health, but so do excessively high carb diets.

This doesn't mean that we should start consuming no heathy fats/essential fatty acids etc, because high saturated fat diets have side effects.

Our synthesis provided convincing evidence that fat-rich meals have an undoubted capacity to transiently modulate postprandial metabolic endotoxemia in humans. Indeed, recent studies have demonstrated that fat absorption and digestion is a step where dissociated LPS can be incorporated into chylomicrons (i.e., lipoproteins responsible for the transport of lipids through the gut barrier) thereby enabling their translocation into the bloodstream [21,22]. We highlighted that not only the quantity but also the quality of dietary fats may influence metabolic endotoxemia. Precisely, imbalanced diets in favour of saturated fatty acids have been associated with higher postprandial levels of LPS while a combination of these diets with other healthy nutritional components, such as fibre [41], is able to limit this increase.

long-term consumption of a high-energy-density diet, especially those derived from fat, has been associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis [72]. By shifting the balance in favour of, or at the expense of, LPS-containing Gram-negative bacteria, diet could also contribute to the amount of LPS in the gut and their translocation into the bloodstream.

The main consequence of chronic exposure to endotoxemia is the onset and maintenance of a low-grade inflammation state, with associated deleterious outcomes in elderly individuals [26,27].

Regarding the association between endotoxemia and dementia, the results seem to be more consistent, while they are based on a very small number of studies. Dementia results in a long insidious process accompanied by molecular and physiological changes, including oxidative stress, impairment in neuronal function and the death of neuronal cells, which may be caused or worsened by neuroinflammation [26,81].

If you connect the dots from the previous study, people with constipation that eat saturated fat will suffer a lot from inflammation (body, brain, etc). This a break down.

Saturated fat diet promotes negative gram bacteria (in stool)

Negative gram bacteria has poisonous membrane that leaks through the gut into the blood stream. This is an invasion of poison.

People with long time bowel movements (constipation) are exposed to the leak of the bad bacteria longer (endotoximia).

People that switch diet to a low fat should feel better from bad bacteria inflammation because they will have different bacteria, and shorter bowel movements if they choose the food right.

In a way, this a way to explain why people with constipation feel worse.

Can you define

HIGH and

what Kind of carbs (we dont eat carbs we eat foods)

and explain what effects?

Some fat is good and some type of fats are good.

Most people get constipation from eating supplements. If you want to speed things up, check your supplements as the first cause.

High fat slows digestion. If you want faster transit time, eat less fat. Eat more vit C (citrus). Too much fat can sink you.

All dietary fat goes through the cells before it goes into the blood. So everything you eat goes inside the cell in one side and comes out of the other side, If you eat lots of fat, it could mess things up.

These are examples of supplements that produce constipation in the upper GI track (stops motion). This creates much longer transit time and prevents normal healthy function. It could also create bloating and if taken with lots of fiber an air bomb from fermentation that does not move.

Grape seed extract
Omega 3
NAC
Iron
Calcium
etc

Panchito - re your June 18th comment about supplements producing constipation. Has this been proved true? Or are there some people, maybe, who are constipation-prone for other reasons, and the supps you mention will slow them up even more.

Re iron - the newer varieties of iron do not have a negative effect. I believe it's only the once popular iron sulfate pills.

It is true. It happens only to some people. It is a delay of the upper track not the colon. Other supplements cause anxiety. Vit C in powder form causes fatigue at large quantities. The best sup. is coq10 (water soluble form). it crosses brain barrier.

Some foods that can cause constipation and fly under the radar:

Fermented foods. Probiotics can also do that.

Chia seeds (crushed). The dark fiber has molecules that can slow down the upper track. Probably flax seeds too.

Refrigerated beans. They create a cement that stick to the walls. Fresh made beans are OK.

Panchito, this is all quite interesting. I wasn't aware of some of those things you mention.

When you speak of "refrigerated beans", do you mean fresh string or wax beans, or do you mean mature beans, such as black beans, kidney beans, navy beans, etc?

According to old Chinese medicine, you should never consume anything icy or cold, straight out of the refrigerator or freezer, as it "freezes" your stomach and reduces digestibility of all foods. People who eat a lot of cold foods can expect serious chronic trouble down the line. Too bad, ice cream lovers.

I was referring to the black, kidney, navy beans.

Soluble fiber (in large amounts) can also cause delays. For example, cooked oats can create a semi thick gelatin like substance that mechanically plugs down the flow. Apples can cause it too.

Also, there are age related declines in smooth muscle function, nerve function, etc., that can play a role. This age decline could be corrected with some supplements better than food. There are for example some aminoacids that your body make in less quantity with age. If you are over 50, then it would help.

Norman Walker would agree with you on the oatmeal being cloggy. He's no fan of heavy carb foods. Indeed, he even considers occasional animal fat (rich cream; goats milk; fish) to be preferable To him, heavy carbs (cooked starches) are the worst thing ever, and responsible for virtually all our health woes. He might be correct. I sure like his books, anyway. Have you read any of them?
