Wheatgrass assists in heme production

Wheatgrass has been studied in the treatment of pancytopenia [10], hematological toxicity related to chemotherapy in cancer patients [11], and in thalassemia [12-13]. In Indian studies, wheatgrass has been shown to reduce the requirements of blood transfusion [12-13].

The postulated mechanism of wheatgrass extract is the rapid absorption of chlorophyll and action at the cellular level in the bone marrow, assisting in heme production [16]. Recently, in the murine model, the iron chelator property of wheatgrass extract and its purified compound, mugineic acid, has been proved [17].

Treatment with wheatgrass tablets maintains serum ferritin levels and increases HbF levels in thalassemic children receiving chronic blood transfusions.

Heme is a precursor to hemoglobin, which is necessary to bind oxygen in the bloodstream. Heme is biosynthesized in both the bone marrow and the liver.[1]

Hemes are most commonly recognized as components of hemoglobin, the red pigment in blood, but are also found in a number of other biologically important hemoproteins such as myoglobin, cytochromes, catalases, heme peroxidase, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase.[5][6]

The heme iron serves as a source or sink of electrons during electron transfer or redox chemistry.

The most common type is heme B; other important types include heme A and heme C. Isolated hemes are commonly designated by capital letters while hemes bound to proteins are designated by lower case letters.

The organs mainly involved in heme synthesis are the liver (in which the rate of synthesis is highly variable, depending on the systemic heme pool) and the bone marrow (in which rate of synthesis of Heme is relatively constant and depends on the production of globin chain), although every cell requires heme to function properly. However, due to its toxic properties, proteins such as Hemopexin (Hx) are required to help maintain physiological stores of iron in order for them to be used in synthesis.[28] Heme is seen as an intermediate molecule in catabolism of hemoglobin in the process of bilirubin metabolism.

This video explains what is heme, what it does, what is needed to make it, and how it is made. After this video you'll have all the pieces winking smiley

Quick summary: It needs the aminoacid glycine (example hemp seeds), iron and zinc. Lead poisoning leads to anemia because it cuts heme production. Now chlorella detoxes lead and probably wheatgrass too because of the chlorophyll.
