Supplement Toxicity - HPMC

Supplements in capsule form can be toxic; 'bad' for us. I found out a while ago when my daughter asked me to research some supplement or other. I don't use supplements on a regular basis, because I feel like they're synthetic, dead, and the fillers are toxic - like Magnesium Stearate, for example. That makes my head feel tight, I guess because it's a binder, it's binding something in my head. Nasty stuff.

So I was looking at the ingredients in a particular supplement. It said - HPMC capsule. So I looked that up. Eye opening!

HPMC is short for Hypromellose - which is short for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.

Capsules made from HPMC are usually just labeled - Cellulose Capsule, Veggie Cap or Vegetable Capsule. Sounds innocuous but it's not. It's HPMC.

If you look on Google -

Hypromellose (INN), short for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), is a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer used in eye drops, ...

HPMC is also used in eye drops and they contain warnings, side effects. .

HPMC is also used as an ingredient in Gluten-Free breads.

What is Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose?
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HMPC) is a polysaccharide additive used in frosting, coatings, gluten-free baking and dietary supplements. It is also a stabilizer, thickener, fat replacer, bulking and binding agent.

HPMC is listed as a food ingredient — E464 — which means that recommended daily maximum quantities must be defined. HPMC undergoes a rigorous manufacturing process involving the synthetic — and not natural — alteration of cellulose. During production, various highly reactive, harmful or toxic substances are used that must be removed and disposed after production, including propylene oxide (which is considered to be carcinogenic) and chloromethane.

Hypromellose (hydroxypropylmethylcellulose) is a long-established component of sustained-release pharmaceutical formulations.

Hypromellose (HPMC) is a water-soluble hydrophilic, non-ionic cellulose ether.

Yes, HPMC is a Cellulose Capsule - it starts out as Cellulose - then it's chemically altered.

"9.5.3 Chemically modified cellulose–based hydrogels
Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) is a precursor of cellulose and is modified with small amounts of propylene glycol ether groups attached to the anhydroglucose terminus of the cellulose. It is a self-hardening hydrogel having silane grafted along the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose grafted with silanol group (Si-HPMC) chains (Fatimi et al., 2008)."

Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) is odorless, tasteless,non-toxic cellulose ethers produce from natural high molecula and protective colloid properties of surface activity and maintain moisture function properties ect.cellulose through series of chemical processing and achieved. It is white powder with good water solubility. It has thickening, adhesion ,dispersing, emulsifying, film, suspended, adsorption, gel. In the course of construction,HPMC is used for wall putty, tile adhesive, cement mortar, dry mix mortar, wall plaster, skim coat, mortar, concrete admixtures, cement, gypsum plaster, joints fillers, crack filler, etc.
