Raw foods on a budget

Date: February 13, 2007 11:20PM What are your tips on eating raw on a budget? I am really interested in hearing where other raw foodists have found the best deals on their grocery lists.
For instance, I have found the best price on medjool dates (they are like candy to me) is at Trader Joes. I have also found that Whole Foods Market is where I need to shop for specialty/staple items such as raw honey, etc. Additionally, Whole Foods is where I've found inexpensive frozen fruits. As a raw food community, lets help each other out! Re: Raw foods on a budget

Date: February 13, 2007 11:50PM It's way less expensive then buying SAD groceries, unless you buy already prepared raw foods... most everything you can make yourself... only a few things are pricy, like organic dates and papaya.. I've only eaten organic for many years, so I'm used to organic prices. Gosh even if you only have a 5 bucks you can buy bananas and nuts or seeds from bulk and there you go... cheapest diet on the planet. Re: Raw foods on a budget

I'm so used to organic prices that when I was forced to buy some conventional spinach a while back I thought the price had rung up incorrectly. But yeah, sticking to bulk foods and simple ingredients really helps keep prices down. I just started transitioning to raw, but last summer when I stopped eating all processed foods and started buying only bulk grains, legumes, and nuts and just fresh produce, my grocery bill really did go down. Date: February 14, 2007 02:24AM Some grocery stores sell "ripe bananas" at a discounted price because they think they are too ripe (freckled). But they are just starting to get good! So finding a store that does that can be great.
I buy bulk produce every 2 weeks with a group of people. The minimum order for home delivery (we use Veritable Vegetable) is only $250, which we usually exceed by a lot. This saves us a ton of money on produce, and I rarely have to go grocery shopping. We do the same thing with dates, ordering them in bulk to get cheaper prices per pound. If possible, in the summer you can grow your own lettuce, tomatoes, etc. and this can really save $$ on the heirloom tomato feast! Another idea, I am just starting to learn about places to go to forage fruit from abandoned trees. Love, Uma Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
