Date: March 09, 2007 06:25PM enchantress.. are you shopping at capers or choices? You can get durians at the superstore for a LOT LESS!!!! and they are quite tasty. Also, brave the Vancouver chinatown and watch what others are paying for the same thing and make sure they don't overcharge you if you are caucasian. The proprietors in Vancouver's chinatown are famous for overcharging people who don't understand Mandarin.

Date: March 09, 2007 07:53PM In San Francisco, the durian prices seem to be around $0.80 to $1.20 a pound for frozen. For fresh durian, the prices goes up to $4 to $5 or more a pound. $100 canadian dollars seems pretty expensive for even a fresh durian. Re: where to buy durian?

In NYC, just go to Chinatown. you don't even have to venture into the thick of it. There are stands on Chrystie right by manhatten bridge and some closer to bowery that have fresh durian. They are about $6 for a large 8-10 diam incher. Some non-descript little grocery stores in the area have frozen durian. Re: where to buy durian?

When I used to eat durian, I always bought it in Brooklyn's Chinatown at a market called Lien Hung (5705 8th Ave). The subway stop is only a few blocks away ("N" train, 8th Ave stop). The market was recommended to me by Paul Nison as having the best frozen durian in town. They don't carry fresh durian. Re: where to buy durian?
