Mangoes and Poison Ivy

Hi,
Is there anyone here who eats mangoes with their skin?
I stopped eating mangoes completely after I found out mango skin has poison ivy.
I love mangoes; but if the skin has poison ivy, we should assume that the flesh has poison ivy from the skin or in itself as well. I don't eat cashews for the same reason. Mangoes belong to the cashew family.

I don't know what to do. Should I eat mangoes? Is mango skin safe? Is mango safe to eat? Does a ripe mango have less poison ivy? Should I eat mangoes with their skin or without their skin?

Navid

I don't think you should eat the skin; avoid it as much as possible. I'm very allergic to poisons ivy, oak, sumac, and I find there is some effect from eating mangoes; that and the fact that they are bathed in formaldehyde and pasteurized before being shipped from abroad makes me avoid them. There are so much domestic, seasonal foods that are better; let the Mexicans enjoy their own, untreated mangoes.

Force the change you want to see in the world through direct, socialist democracy!

WHAT??? they are bathed in formaldehyde? and pasteurized? not the organic ones though, right? i LOOOOOVEEE mangoes and eat at least one every day. it's sad though b/c they never put the organic ones on sale and they cost $1.99 at whole foods..and that's the only place i can find them.

how do you pasteurize fruit? wouldn't that involve cooking it, which would alter it's appearance?

also why would mangoes give you poison ivey? can someone explain this to me? thanks!

The mango sap is caustic and is present a bit in the skin. If you don't eat the skin, you should be OK. During mango season, I would go through several cases of mangos a week, so it is possible to eat entire meals of only mangos and not have problems.
