overcoming cravings ...!

HIYA!

While living in Thailand with a Buddhist group I learned of a way that some Buddhists use to overcome food cravings. If you're squeamish, you may prefer to not read this, or at least to not try it.

Chew your food thoroughly, then spit it out. Look at it. Contemplate how disgusting it looks. Then put it back in your mouth, chew it some more, then swallow it.

Be mindful the whole time of your feelings, sensations, and anything else that appears mentally or physically. And be okay with whatever appears. If you feel disgust at any point in the meditation, take note of it, and continue. If you don't want to continue, then stop. Everything is okay. Anything is okay. Even feeling that something is not okay, is okay!

Do this with foods that you want to stop eating, or with foods that you want to stop overeating, or with any foods.

Myself, I've never had a problem with it. I can put anything in my mouth, chew and chew, spit it out, look at it hard, then put it back in and continue chewing with just as happily as before. But apparently it works for some people. I think this is a technique that Buddha himself suggested.

I like bizarre things and if you do too, well, here you go.

I might try that just to see what happens. Sounds kind of disgusting, but definitely interesting!

What weird critters we are...

I mean, if you can do THAT...take chewed up food, spit it out, and then put it back in your mouth...then why in hell can't you overcome a food craving? Weird.

Weird critters indeed. If anyone tries this, please write about it.

This is strange indeed. Can you imagine doing it if you had company over! It would be like something out of a comedy show.
I might give it a try.

I used to eat my salads this way...would chew greens as much as possible till it was a big ball of fiber then I would spit it out and pick at it..I guess it didn't suceed in curbing my salad cravings..lol

I was about to say I think this would only work with cooked foods..although I think i used to do it with crackers also..haha
