kombucha.... heeeelp meeeeeee

hey everybody
I've been trying to make Kombucha tea, and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right... the stuff's been in the pot now for 3 weeks, the baby culture is pretty thin and floating at the top, and the mother culture has sank down to the bottom. I thought the mother and baby were supposed to be attached to each other by now. It all smells pretty gross as well. has something gone horribly wrong? I thought it would be pretty much ready to drink by now.

would appreciate any advice from kombucha experts (;

isn't kambucha tea suppose to be made with sugar....!!! ....that's what i was told by a local row friend...that no substitute will work....
i did love the taste of it though...but wouldn't have it for that reason...

hope someone will correct me..

yes it's true basia , you just use ordinary sugar. But apparently that sugar feeds the culture, not you.
