colorless spots inside apples?

Date: October 07, 2007 11:47AM What is happening--when I bite into an apple sometimes, and there are these dappled pockets of clear areas in the fruit? do you know what I'm speaking of? They are still crunchy; it isn't a bruise, and they seem to taste alright. Just the whiteness is gone from them. measure twice, cut once. . does it taste less sweet? like alcohol? . if you don't notice much difference..I would not worry..a little fermentation is probably OK Re: colorless spots inside apples?

Date: October 07, 2007 01:15PM I've noticed those weird clear spots too.
Invariably they are associated with clumpy whitish/light green mold growing in the core around the seeds. I've also noticed strange brown areas at the base of bananas, and sometimes elsewhere on the banana. I think this is some form of mold too. I wonder how many people notice these things... Date: October 07, 2007 02:16PM i had a plum the other day that the pit split in my mouth while i was sucking the flesh off it .. when i looked at the little seed inside it had started to sprout !

Date: October 07, 2007 07:31PM Those clear spots are sugar spots, areas of high sugar make them clear. IMO it is the best of apples that have them. Re: colorless spots inside apples?

Date: October 08, 2007 02:28AM . yeah..people often refer to the brown spots on bananas as 'sweet spots'. It really is the beginnings of fermentation, but like I mentioned, OK if it doesn't taste like alcohol. Re: colorless spots inside apples?

Date: October 08, 2007 02:46PM In the apples I have had the clear spots were most definitely not fermentation. They were very healthy parts of very good firm apples, particularly good apples. Anaken must have found something different. Re: colorless spots inside apples?

Date: October 08, 2007 04:58PM . I don't think we are disagreeing.
. the life-cycle of fruit..is like a steep mountain. . at the top, is peak ripeness, to the east is starch, to the west is fermentation around the summit, is a 'fruitful window' . so the sweetest spots are the spots just prior to fermentation, where the largest portion/percentage of carbohydrate is available. you can have a good start going down the mountain, but pretty soon its freefall! lol . enjoy Re: colorless spots inside apples?
