i was just wondering that! i researched a little and found consistent stats:

Young coconuts are considered highly nutritious. One whole coconut has only 140 calories and provides 17% of the RDA for calcium. The total fat content is 3 grams, all saturated. With a zero content of cholesterol, the young coconut has 50 mg sodium, 28 grams of carbohydrate, 2 grams of fiber,15 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of protein. [www.vegparadise.com]

water is about 17 calories per coconut

hope that helps!

Being a diabetic, I always noticed a considerable rise in my blood sugar levels whenever I drank the water. In fact, I would drink it when I was having a low blood sugar to bring it back up. It SEEMS like coconut water has far more calories than that (think about how sweet the water tastes).

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the info. Sierradawn, I agree that the water most likely has more than 17 calories. There's a fair amount of it and it's sweet, partly from the tropical flavor itself and probably not as sweet as say, your average commercial apple juice, but still, I'd guess a minimum of 60 cal/cup for the water, mostly from sugar. That's interesting that they say 140 cal overall. At first I thought young coconut must be pretty high cal/high fat, since mature or shredded coconut in relatively dense in calories and fat. I just ate one though, and it's true that it isn't *that* greasy or heavy, hmm. Thanks again for the link.

Oh, farther down on the page it says coconut water has about 46 calories per cup. Not sure where that 17 came from, though it says one whole young coconut has 17% of the RDA for calcium. hth.
