How can you tell your your mushrooms have gone bad?

Date: February 24, 2008 06:44PM A week ago I bought some organic portabella mushrooms from Whole Foods. I’ve been keeping them in these special green bags that are supposed to help preserve your fresh produce. The mushrooms smell funny, almost fishy. Does that mean the are spoiled? I hate to waste them as they were very expensive. Thanks! Denise Re: How can you tell your your mushrooms have gone bad?

Date: February 24, 2008 06:59PM I'd say they've likely gone bad... particularly if they are also slimy. Mushrooms should have a faint earthy smell. You should eat mushrooms within a week of purchase as that is typically their shelf life.
I've heard that those produce bags work well for preserving some vegetables but actually speed up the ripening of others. My website: The Coconut Chronicles Re: How can you tell your your mushrooms have gone bad?

Date: February 24, 2008 08:43PM Pippin, I would say that the mushrooms are bad and they need to be thrown away. I agree with TCC above on the slime test. I don't eat mushrooms anymore but that was the sign when I used to. Sorry about the financial loss. I know how it feels. It's a bit of a trick to know the right amount to buy before the food goes bad. It's a bit of a learning curve. Good luck. Therese Re: How can you tell your your mushrooms have gone bad?
