I had the opportunity to sing in the former Soviet Union - just when Perestroika was happening. The minute I stepped off the plane and felt the place and the people, I understood so much of myself. I felt eharthome immediately!

I don't remember the exact year this kicked in - late 80's. But before then, as I'm sure you know, the then Soviet Union was a completely totalitarian state. No free press - no free anything. If you spoke out against the communist regime...bye bye!

After the Berlin wall tumbled, things began to free up. This process, particularly relative to the press and such was called Perestroika. Forgive me for not knowing exactly what it means, translated.

Veronique... when I was there, people were still terrified to look you in the eye, scared to death if you smiled at them. People were trained simply to obey like lab rats. They were not trained to think for themselves in any way. The Mother Government had done all that for them for so long, half the spirit was drained out of the people. It was very sad.

But not all of it!!!!!!

We met with a top group of Soviet film makers and newpaper people. We had a dialogue with them. There was this one woman in that group who kept looking at me, and I at her - sensing a potent and wildly free connection. She didn't speak English, nor I Russian. After the meeting was over, she grabs my arm and starts marching me out of the building with her, we start singing "Torreador, En Garde" from Carmen....we both knew it....it enabled me to connect.

She keeps marching me on.....I don't know where we're going, but I move with it. We end up at her apartment. She calls a friend who speaks English. He comes over and we begin to "talk" via translator. An incredibly potent conversation about anit-semitisim - which is rife in the then Soviet Union.

She is the official documentarian for Chernobyl. Her name, translated, is "Love." People are scared of her because the associate her with Chernobyl. Very lonely life. But a wild and wonderful woman - a true sister.

Now, they start tossing back vodka. I cannot refuse their hospitality on that score, even thought I don't drink and have no tolerance. I'm saying a prayer in my heart that I can survive round after round and somehow find my way back to my little hotel. Somehow, thank God, I did. I don't know how.


There are so many stories like this. The Russian people are in my heart and prayers constantly.
