Organic Farm In California Needs Mulberry Pickers

We are a 27+ year established farm in Ojai, California and we grow about 30 types of fruits, such as: mulberries, figs, carob, avocados, oranges, apricots, apples, plums, jujube, persimmon, pomegranite, sapote, pummelo, blood orange, etc.
Located in a coastal valley about 12 miles from the ocean with a lot of hiking and biking trails in the area, and a nice river behind the farm, and surrounded by mountains.
Right now we are trying to connect with folks who would be interested in helping us harvest our mulberry crop, from now until about July 20 or so. We will pay $5 per flat, and some days there may only be one flat to pick...other days over 20 flats to pull in. Dorm-style accomodations, and we have a lot of Raw Foods literature dating back some 100+ years.

Aren't there lots of illegal immigrants from Mexico who, from what we are told here in Canada, are anxious to do this kind of labour?

How big is a flat? How long would it take an average worker to pick one? How large are mulberries, anyway? Just off the top, this seems like low wages for hard work. I have picked berries of all kinds, and it is hard work. Wages need to be good to exert yourself that way all day long.

It can actually cost more to commercially harvest fruit than the price being paid per pound. For example, I know of an avocado orchard in Ojai where the avocados aren't being picked because picking costs are higher than the wholesale price per pound. The avos are just falling and rotting, unharvested.

Then there is something terribly wrong with our economic/political system.
