dehydrators- energy consumption

i am wondering about the energy consumption of dehydrators. i have read several recipies which require several hours in a dehydrator and i am wondering about how ecological that would be. does any one know how cooker /dehydrators compare in terms of the energy they use? i hope that they arent too energy hungry because i sure would like to try some of those recipies but only if i could do that with a clear ecological conscience. there is no point eating green if we are not being kind to mother nature at the same time! hilary Re: dehydrators- energy consumption

Date: November 18, 2007 08:33PM They are energy hogs because you have to keep them on for a long time.
typical food dehydrator is 875 watts. if you use it for 6 hours, that's 5.3 kwH typical oven burner, large, is 2400 watts if you use it for 1 hour, that.s 2.4 kwH typical range is 2660 watts if you use it for 1 hour, that's 2.7 kwH ref [www.clallampud.net] Re: dehydrators- energy consumption

Date: November 19, 2007 03:02PM I recently got a power meter and used it to see how much energy my dehydrator was pulling. It started out pulling close to 900 watts, but after an initial warming period dropped to about 23 watts. I didn't watch it but I suspect it periodically went back up to 900 watts in order to reheat. After nine hours of operation I found that it had been pulling an average of 170 watts - that's 1 kwH every 6 hours. Much better than I'd hoped!
My dehydrator is the five tray model from SausageMaker. I've been using it on the lowest temperature setting and have no plans to test power usage at higher temperatures. Re: dehydrators- energy consumption
