Carrot Juicing
Posted by: Wheatgrass Yogi ()
Date: April 14, 2009 01:28AM

It's been a long time coming, but I've decided to
go ahead and live on 'Juice Only' for a while, just to see if
it's as good as I think it is. I mean, after all, some people
here have gone on 92-day Juice Feasts. I've done short 'spurts'
and like the way I look and feel.
Therefore, if most of my Diet is going to be Carrot Juice, then
I want to use a Juicer that's easy, both in operation and clean-up.
Need I say more?....WY

I am lacking in funds and found a juicer on freecycle.
It is a Kenmore and I juice daily with it.
Soft things like Kale do not work well in it.
Carrot juice is a breeze with this juicer.
Takes me less than ten minutes to break down and clean.
This includes prepping veggies and juicing.
So would say a quick juicer.

Before this I had a borrowed Jack Lalane and did not like it at all.
Carrots bogged it down causing heat.

One day I will own a Norwalk Juicer and life will be Great.

WY,

I'm juice fasting too! Carrot-based mixed with whatever I can get my hands on. I also add some superfood like chorella and spirulina to the mix.

Nope...the 4000 is the one I'm going with. The plan
is to juice Carrots twice a day, 2 1/2 pounds each time. I want a
centrifugal for that. It would be very unpleasant to use a twin-gear,
or a single-auger for making that much juice everyday, even though
the single-auger would be the easiest to clean.
You have a GreenStar, don't you Jodi?

Why don't you join me? I think Rawie is Juice Fasting too.
Kwan even said she'd like to do some juicing. Mine will be more of a
Fast, rather than a Feast. My daily diet will be about 50 ounces
of juice (mostly Carrot, but Wheatgrass, and Celery too....WY

I see we're singing again from the same page of the
Hymnal. I'm having mostly Carrot Juice too.
Tell me again what Juicer you're using for Carrots.
By the way, that YouTube of the Norwalk Press Juicer showed
how dark the Carrot Juice is when pressed through the nylon
bag. I didn't like the taste of the juice. I spent many sessions
on the phone with the President of Norwalk. He told me (years ago
now) how they used Hemp for their bags, but the fruit acids dissolved
the cotton, so they went to a food-grade plastic....WY

Yuck! So much for healthy juicing with all those 'unknown' substances leeching out from their bags!

There's a youtube video showing 1kg of carrot producing 0.6L of juice using a Champion juicer. Pretty good yield, and the process didn't look painful at all. That video convinced me to try the Champion. The cleaning process is definitely more involved than the Omega, but probably comparable to a centrifugal.

I go through a couple lbs of carrots a day easy when I'm juice fasting. I'm using the Jack Lalanne now until I get the Omega 8006 and the Champion. I think the trick with the Jack Lalanne is not to fight it. The motor is not very strong and the rpm is relative low (which I prefer). Just toss in not more than 3 medium size carrots in the chute at a time, let them swirl on their own, don't use the pusher until the very end. If you tried the force the carrots down, it will just wear out the blade and burn the motor which is probably what joe did.

The Breville Elite would be really fast if speed is what you're after. I didn't like it because it's too powerful and blows foam and pulp back into the juice. I also found Breville's blades wear out very quickly. Basically, you'll start to notice less yield (wetter pulp) have only a couple months of daily use. I also think that kind of power would kill more enzymes than something like the Jack Lalanne.

p.s. Sometimes when I get lazy, I'll just pick up a jug of organic carrot juice from Trader Joe's. It's flash pasturized, not the best, but better than nothing.

Hey, all!

I use my Champion juicer for things like carrots and beets and it works like a, well, champ!

I wouldn't use a centrifugal juicer because I had one, lo these many years ago, and finally tired of wrecking new toothbrushes trying to clean the insoluble fiber from carrots out of the tiny, tiny mesh of the seive. A maddening process only a cruel Greek deity would require of someone otherwise living a good and chaste life. Why make it harder on yourself than it needs to be, WY?

I used a Champion (for many years) to make Carrot
Juice when I first started juicing.

you? I'm comfortable doing it my way....WY

WY,

Perhaps I should have written, "Why make it harder on yourself than it needs to be, WY, if the easier way gives great results?" : )

Does this mean you're going with a centrifugal juicer? Why did you stop using a Champion for carrot juice? Did it prove sub-par in performance somehow? I've never had a problem with mine, especially with root vegetables, and I'd much rather clean the teeth of my Champion free of carrot fibers than a centrifugal juicer. But maybe you have more patience for that than I have. I have always heard that a Greenstar works better for soft leafy things, which is why I got the Champion instead, knowing I'd be doing tons of carrots and beets, and apples, etc.

I've tried just about every Juicer on the Market
today. The one I like best for Carrot Juice is the Omega 4000.

I had a couple of problems with the Champion. The screen
clogs very quickly, making the juice hard to go through. I had to stop
every couple of ounces to clean the screen. Also, the pulp collected
behind the Auger, causing it to 'work' its way off the shaft. In its
favor, the Champion is probably the easiest juicer to clean.
The last time I used a Champion was at a friend's for Watermelon Rind,
and the pulp wouldn't come out....what a mess it was. This happened
several times during my visit.

I do Carrots, but Beets are too messy, and I haven't found
a Juicer yet that does Apples properly (maybe a Hydraulic Press would)....WY

Hey gang!
Gee, a whole bunch of my favorite people, all in one thread-- how cool!

I'm ready, finally. I was waiting for the weather to break, and today it got up past 70 and it was gorgeous. So tonight's the night: at 12am midnight the only food I'm going to have for a really, really LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time is going to come out of my Juiceman Juicer. I'm not sayin' here how long-- I think it's bad luck-- but I've got 2 possible completion dates marked off on my calendar, and I'm going to be juicing A LOT of carrots, celery, etc., between now and then, no matter which date I pick.

The Juiceman does great carrot juice, btw. for the cheap price ($79.95). Has a huge hopper, makes good juice really easily, and it's a cinch to clean up.

Which Champion?
Posted by: Rawie ()
Date: April 18, 2009 03:38AM

Tamu,

Which Champion do you have? I know that the Champion hasn't changed much for the last 50yrs. But, maybe you're using a newer version with very small, minor changes that make a big difference. How much hard root veggies do you do (2lbs+)? What kind of yield are you getting? Does it seem to bog down at the end? Do you alternate between soft and hard veggies? Maybe you've figured out a way to make it work.

Based on the youtube videos I've seen, the verdict is still out there. On more than on one occasion, I read that you must alternate the Champion with hard veggies and soft veggies, and regardless of what you do, it will eventually clogged up and it's NOT a very satisfying process. On the other hand, there is at least one youtube video detailing the process of juicing 1kg of carrot (small to medium size) and yeilding 0.6L of juice. Very good yield! The entire process seemed very smooth and the guy didn't have to muscle his way thru.

-thx, rawie
p.s. Have you tried out the raw chocolate recipes yet?

I'm into day 4 of my Juice Fast. I feel like I
can go forever....have even lost a couple of pounds.
Let us know how you're doing.
BTW, I'd be interested in how much carrot juice your JuiceMan
produces. My Omega 4000 makes 8 ounces (on average) of juice
for every pound of carrots....WY

WY--
Yep, I'm definitely feeling my power! R-rrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!! ;-p

My last long juice fast was 40 days. This one will be at least that, but probably quite a bit longer. I do much better with juice fasting (once I get started) than solid food-- I feel like a 'Real Human' when I'm juicing.

I'll keep you posted on how many ounces of juice I get out of a lb. of carrots.

This morning I made a huge batch of carrot/apple juice spiked with a bit of ginger and lime juice, and I purposely separated out exactly 1 lb. of carrots first to see what it would yield. I was pleasantly surprised: 9 oz!

You would have to take an average of 4 or
5 times to get a more accurate number, but 9 ounces tells
me your Juicer is efficient. Maybe someone with a GreenStar
will tell us what they get?.

P.S.....I've decided to juice Carrots twice a day,
with Celery Juice in between....spacing it all out between 8am

juicings.
Do you have a daily plan?

WY--
>I feel I'm beginning to know you personally.<

:-) Me too, WY. This board is becoming 'Friend Central' for me, and I love getting to know you and other live food enthusiasts here. I haven't met anyone in my immediate locale who's into raw food, so it's important to me. Sometimes I wish we could all meet up somewhere and meet in person; I'm sure it would be a real love fest and we'd all have a blast.

>Do you prefer Kwan or Sharrhan?<

I used to prefer Sharrhan, but now that I've been 'Kwan' on the board for so long, I'm getting attached to it. I find them interchangeable and love them both.

>Do you have a daily plan?<

I am still working that out. My main plan today was to just get all the way through the day with only juice, no questions asked, ha ha!-- so I allowed myself pretty much all the juice I wanted. (It's been quite easy.) But I have been seriously thinking of stopping at 5pm and dry fasting till the next morning from here on in. My plan so far is to a) drink mostly carrot juice, b) keep sweet fruit juice to a minimum (only adding some apples to some of my carrot juice or celery juice) if I want, and c) setting up a schedule of XXX oz. per day (number to be decided tonight), divided up into 5 or 6 servings per day, spaced out pretty evenly between 9am and 5pm.

I like your 9 to 5 plan, but couldn't do the 5 or 6
servings. Juicing Carrots twice a day, and Celery once, is a lot
of work for me....the time just flies, making it seem like I'm
juicing all day long. I guess you plan on juicing and storing? I'd hate
to think I had to juice 6 times a day.
Let's report back here every evening to report what we did that day....
agreed? Anyone else feel free to join us....WY

Nice!! I may have to buy a JuiceMan. LOL. I only got
20 ounces from 2 1/2 pounds today, but I strain out all
of the Pulp. I also had 16 ounces of Celery Juice.
I've been craving Pineapple Juice, and may go to Publix tonight
before they close. Tomorrow will be Day 6 for me. Have you
decided how long you're going? I may stop after 7. I've been
missing Green Smoothies....WY

Oh well, if I did that I'm sure my yield would be considerably smaller too. I used to strain my juice through a strainer like you do, but this juice doesn't taste that pulpy, and besides, I'm lazy.

Mmmm, pineapple juice. Had some last night with celery. Today I had quite a bit of carrot/ginger (I had to prepare it ahead, because I was at a music event that was 3 hours long) and then when I got home I juiced three grapefruit. I crave grapefruit juice every now and then.

I will do at least 60 days, but I'm leaning toward 92.

Hey WY,
I'd LOVE to have a fasting buddy. Let's join forces and inspire each other! And believe me, the longer you go, the better you'll feel. My last long one was 40 days, and when I got to day 40 I didn't want to quit, not at all! (I can't remember why I did stop at 40 days; maybe just because I had set a goal of 40 days. Silly me.) I'm determined with this juice fast to blast off into the absolute stratosphere of physical/mental/spiritual well-being and reach levels of energy and rejuvenation that I haven't touched yet in this lifetime. Not only to reach my own personal 'best,' but to give hope to other people and show them that you can be past middle age and still be amazingly healthy, fit, energetic and youthful.
