Using a blender as a food processor?

Hello,
I am researching the various high-end blenders and was wondering if it is possible or advisable to chop items such as a yellow onion or red pepper in a blender in the same way as a food processor? I am outgrowing my "Personal Blender".

Is the square blending container of the Blendtec better at chopping?

Traditionally, blenders work best with a liquid base, and that's still true, but some of the high-end blenders will work reasonably well at pulverizing drier foods. If you want to turn a yellow onion into paste, then you could probably do that with a powerful blender. If you want to chop the onion, then it's a no-go. Some of the onion will be reduced to paste while other pieces are still the same size they were when you put them in. (The same holds true for nearly anything you put in the blender.)

For chopping veggies without a food processor, you're probably best off sticking with a knife. You might also try a manual food chopper device, which can frequently be found at garage sales for a steal. They can be much faster at fine chopping than a knife.

I use an electric mini chopper that chops veggies, nuts, garlic, herbs, etc. and makes banana ice cream. It very small compared to a food processor & inexpensive.

It's the Black & Decker 3-Cup Food Chopper model EHC650. It's so great it has almost perfect amazon reviews (over 200) and they keep raising the price, though it's still cheap. You can buy it at Target too.

I do use my vita mix as a fp but they dont always come out as uniform as I would like. It does not puree things as you can control the settings. It does a good enough job that I never have to use a fp. I chop onions, zuchini, bell peppers are a little hard though
