I asked this (below) here [www.rawfoodsupport.com] but no one responded... soooo, if anyone has any pointers please let me know. I got a tracking number for the Green Star I ordered and it is due to arrive on the 24th. I'll spend a week comparing it to the Omega 8006 then sell one at my cost to one of my best friends. I remember first being on this forum and thinking people who owned more than one juicer at a time had to be nuts. ha ha ha Now, I would love to have a couple of juicers.

Growing Wheatgrass for Dummies?

Hi Everyone,

I do NOT have a green thumb! Because I travel as often as possible when not working, I don't even have houseplants -- though I wish I did because I like them.

I would like to start growing my own wheatgrass and have no idea where to start. Is there a website with instructions for the overwhelmed and inexperienced that can get me started? Barring that, a good book?

I have sprouted things and off and on in the past. I have very little space to do this in. And very little money!

Any pointers toward step by step information would be great. Thanks!

i find keeping an air current going (small desk fan doesnt have to be huge) put a halt to all my original wheatgrass going moldy before i could cut it issues

Hope you are feeling better every day. I think wheatgrass juice will help you muchly. My advice amounts to this:

--Not soaking the wheatgrass grains more than 8 hours also helps with preventing mold.
--Sprouting for 2 1/2 days to give a headstart on sowing seems to help it grow faster.
--Not using a lot of dirt, shallow planting in other words, likewise limits mold.
--Mixing Azomite, or trace minerals into the soil, and into the [purified] watering water, helps develop a better flavor in the finished grass, IMO.

I use Jodi's tip by growing under a ceiling fan.
I soak for 12 hours and never have mold.

I plant immediately after soaking. I found sprouting
first to be too time-consuming.

I use deep bowls and lots of Potting Mix.....better
root system. But it does add to the cost, and there's always a
problem in disposing the mat. Tam.....what do you do with yours?

Same with me, but not too much Clay. I've tried
growing in pure clay, and it killed the grass.
Tamukha....We both get good results using difference methods.
That just shows how easy it is to grow Wheatgrass.

[wincing]threw out my last flat of soil, as it moldered beneath--too humid this week in SE Michigan! I can't use a lot of soil, I can't, I just can't!!! I'll stop whining now : ) Going to try it your way this week and see what happens . . .

fertilizer before topping it with Potting Mix.
I use a blended Carrot, a little Clay, and diluted
Sea water (called Ocean Solution). My Grass always
comes up strong and healthy....tastes good too.

It must be pretty complicated. I'll stick with my
'simple method'. What's the other one....Hydroponics? If
you can grow healthy Wheatgrass without using soil, I guess
I should make an effort to learn.
Jodi...What would you use as a Fertilizer? Keep us updated.....WY

i grow earthworms in containers from compost i water the earthworm castings with water and strain off the *tea* from that and use it for all my plants ive been spraying the root system with that using a spray bottle, so , so far its not a mechanical system its a manual system

so far the only complicated part im up against is finding a mesh that 1) doesnt let the seeds fall through while they germinate , but yet 2) allow me to pull out the whole mat of grass with roots from the meshholes

research will prevail

besides i like doing stuff like this i think given the tools ... i would love to be a mad scientist / inventor

i love to tinker, i love to experiment .. i really get a charge out of it all lol

I've heard of 'Compost Tea'. I should be using it
on my Fruit Trees. I'm having a poor crop this year.

I would kill to be able to juice the Blades with
Roots attached. Let us know what you think when you find the
proper screen, and start juicing. I'm very interested.

Please let us know when your "It's Aliiiive!!!" moment occurs: )

After I do a test run of WY's bowl-n-soil method, I am considering trying a hydroponic method again. I would use a standard growing flat filled with fortified water and germinated seeds, which I would cover with a flattened out piece of that orange plastic mesh sacking that bulk citrus fruit comes in, to direct the growing grass stalks upward. I despair of success, because I doubt it's weighty enough. Maybe I will need two layers. The design flaws are endless . . . .

WY, don't you use an awful lot of soil by using a bowl instead of a tray?

That may be a dumb question. I'm new at this.

Yes, that's a major drawback. On the Positive side, after
the first cutting...I lift up the whole mat...water again...and get a
damn good second cutting.....WY
