Hi,
I am new to green smoothies. They dont taste to bad [spinach plus apples]it comes out a little watery and pulpy...and I end up throwing it away. I have since learned that bananas can make the smoothie creamier which is exactly what i was looking for. However I am allergic to bananas. Is their anything I can add or is there any tricks/tips I can use to finally get a SMOOTH smoothie. I have tried putting the greens and water in the [cheap]blender and mixing that first....helps a little but not much. Thanks guys!!!!!

its really all about a high powered blender. what i reccomend is go buy a juicer somewhere. you can get em for relatively cheap, and this will ensure you take in enough greens and vitamins and enzymes everyday. you need greens NOW ! YESTERDAY!

Recently I tried chia seeds for the first time. When they are soaked in water, they make a mucilagenous - I have no idea if that is even a word - slime. If you do get a high-powered blender, I bet that soaked chia seeds could substitute for the creaminess that bananas give, since you're allergic to them. Another benefit is that they are a great source of protein.

never tried it but avocado seems like it would add the creamy texture to the smoothie...

Would adding hemp milk or almond milk help?

If you haven't tried the avocado yet, it is the way to go. I put them in my fruit smoothies, too. You don't even taste them and they have so many vitamin and minerals.

to increase the consistency of the smoothie, I would recommend adding a binding agent or thickener. And agree with the prior posters that chia seeds are probably the best. Key there is you have to give them the 5 to 10 minutes that they need to thicken. No grinding involved. Whole flax seeds are not a great choice because they do thicken but unlike chia seeds, if they aren't ground, you can't absorb their nutrients. Best to grind. Psyllium fiber is another choice, though not one mentioned often enough. Some have suggested buying raw psyllium fiber in bulk bins at whole foods or health food stores. Have never seen them at any store I've ever visited. I buy my 100 percent psyllium in the form of Konsyl. You will find it in any drug store next to the metamucil for laxatives. But don't use metamucil, which is half sugar or artificial sweetner. The chia seed or ground flax seed are good choices if you need the calories, protein and omega 3s. If you are trying to lose weight and have other sources of omega 3s in your diet, your best bet psyllium fiber however you get it rather through konsyl or the bulk bin. btw, if anyone finds psyllium in a bulk bin, let me know where!

Also, have to try avocado. That is a great suggestion. I haven't eaten much avocado.

Ataulfo mango is great, as well as papaya, creamy jakfruit, white sapote, and persimmon.
